One of the most cited studies on sauna use and Alzheimerโ€™s disease is the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease prospective cohort study conducted by the University of Eastern Finland.

This research followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men (ages 42โ€“60) for an average of about 20 years and found that men who used a sauna 4โ€“7 times per week had a 65 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimerโ€™s disease compared with those who used a sauna only once per week, even after adjusting for factors such as age, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, physical activity, and alcohol use.

The researchers concluded that frequent sauna bathing was strongly associated with reduced dementia risk, likely through improvements in cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, and enhanced brain blood flow, while emphasizing that the findings show a long-term association rather than direct proof of prevention.

WHAT SAUNA DOES TO WOMENโ€™S HORMONES.

Sauna isnโ€™t just sweating. For women in peri and menopause, heat directly influences cortisol, estrogen, insulin and mood.

The rise in core temperature creates a brief cortisol bump, followed by a deeper drop, leaving you calmer and more resilient. Increased circulation supports the thyroid, adrenals and ovaries, helping metabolism and energy. Dopamine and norepinephrine rise too, improving mood and focus.

Heat activates heat-shock proteins, which make your cells more sensitive to estrogen and insulin. This supports blood sugar, metabolism and more stable hormonal signalling as estrogen naturally declines.
