Getting dressed is an important skill for children to learn. It helps to break getting dressed into small steps. Teaching the last step first can work well.

Did you know at Newday Speech Pathology we can do dysphagia/swallowing assessments? Contact us if you or someone you know needs a dysphagia assessment/review. We have years of experience in this field.

With one week to Swallowing Awareness Day, what’s this thing called Dysphagia?

Dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) affects both the young and old and represents a significant risk to their safety and wellbeing.

Swallowing is something we do 500–700 times a day without thinking about it. We trust that food, drink, saliva and medicine will pass through our mouth, throat and oesophagus, arriving safely at our stomach. Yet for about 8 per cent of the population, this simple daily act is a problem when food and drink get into the lungs and cause chest infections like pneumonia. Sometimes the problems are so severe that regular food and drinks can become a life-threatening choking risk.

That’s why on Swallowing Awareness Day, 16 March 2022, we are working to spread the word about swallowing disorders (dysphagia) and that speech pathologists are the professionals who work with Australians with dysphagia. The theme for the day in 2022 is: “Dysphagia. A difficult diagnosis to swallow!”

I am doing the Auslan course to be able to help my clients with hearing loss. Different tools including sing language and visuals are important when working with hearing loss clients.

This week is is Hearing Awareness Week (1 - 7 March) and today is World Hearing Day. This year’s theme is “To hear for life, listen with care”.

Did you know that one of the most common causes of hearing loss is exposure to loud sounds and it’s almost entirely preventable? According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), World Report on Hearing, over 1 billion young people are at risk of permanent hearing loss from listening to music at loud volumes over prolonged periods of time.

Your child's ears should be checked annually to make sure they have healthy hearing. The Sound Scouts hearing screening app is a FREE, fun and simple way to check ears – and it’s suitable for children. With the results immediately generated, it’s easy to find out how well your child is hearing and what the next steps are if you encounter a problem.

For more information and to download the app, click here: https://www.soundscouts.com/au/download/

The Australian Council on Children and the Media (ACCM) is interested in your views on the apps that your child(ren) chooses to play. They want to improve their services and develop new resources for parents and caregivers. The apps they are particularly interested in are the apps your child(ren) plays for fun (not at school, and not social media apps such as Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram etc.).

To find out more and complete the survey, follow this link: https://mqedu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4Gf7OI3qfYzBMgd

The ACCM survey should take about 3 minutes to complete and you will not be identified.
