🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

We are always inspired by what people can do, and by celebrating their achievements we hope you will be too!

With the Winter Olympics having concluded last month, we were reminded of the story of Australia’s first ever Winter Olympics Gold Medalist – Steven Bradbury.

Steven won gold in the men’s 1000m speed skating event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, coming from last place to cross the finish line first after all his opponents crashed into each other and fell on the final lap.

Although this story is often told as an example of good fortune, what is often forgotten is the decades of hard work that had lead to that moment. Steven was competing in his 4th consecutive Winter Olympics, having recovered from an ice skate blade to the thigh requiring 111 stitches, and a broken neck in training in the year 2000 that had doctors telling him that he would never skate again.

Bradbury himself has said: "Obviously I wasn't the fastest skater. I don't think I'll take the medal as the minute-and-a-half of the race I actually won. I'll take it as the last decade of the hard slog I put in."

His story is one of true Australian determination, and an example of where putting in the hard work can pay off even when you least expect it.

🏋🤸‍♀️🚴Our movement menu is designed to showcase a range of different opportunities to be active in our local area.
On the menu this month is…home heart health exercise!

Cardiovascular (or aerobic) exercise – movement that gets your heart pumping a little bit – is fantastic for our health for a variety of reasons. If you are able to get out for a run, a swim, or a bike ride, then that is excellent.

However, there are also ways to huff and puff without leaving your living room! Check out this video on YouTube, for a simple 5-minute aerobic exercise session you can follow, all in the comfort of your own home and without any exercise equipment needed.

This workout is for beginners and great for families that want to burn calories with a home workout. Complete up to four times for a full workout or once for...

🧪🎓✏️Our March Science Snapshot:

As today (13th March) is World Sleep Day, we asked the question:
What Type of Exercise Is Best For Sleep?

A systematic review published in 2025 analysed the results from 86 separate studies (a total of over 7000 participants) to determine the effects of different types of exercise on sleep quality.

The study found that a range of different exercise types had a positive effect on sleep quality, and that Pilates and Aerobic Exercise were the most effective.

The take home message is that if you are someone who struggles with sleep, there is good evidence that regular exercise can improve your sleep quality.

Farewell Kayla!

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our wonderful Receptionist and Exercise Scientist.

After successfully completing her Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science in 2025, Kayla is this month heading back to university full time to complete her Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology, an intensive 18-month program to become qualified as an Exercise Physiologist.

Although we will miss having her around the clinic, we are excited to see her take on this next challenge and wish her the very best in her studies going forward!

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

Our inspiration for February is Jean Stewart, who took up strength training at 81 years old because she was feeling frail and struggling with everyday activities.

Now 96 years old, Jean weight trains twice per week, and can easily spring up from a chair, get up and down from the floor, and do pushups with ease.

Jean is adamant that “without strength training I wouldn’t be alive”, and her message for all older adults is that it’s never too late to start.

You can read more of Jean’s story here:

At 81, Jean Stewart was frustrated by her growing frailty, so she decided to get active. Now 96, push-ups, kettlebell squats and pushing a weight-loaded sledge keep her strong

🏋🤸‍♀️🚴Our movement menu is designed to showcase a range of different opportunities to be active in our local area.

On the menu this month is…Stand Up Paddle Boarding!

When the weather is warm, the air is still, and the ocean is flat like glass, conditions are perfect to get out on a stand up paddle (SUP) board. Fun, low impact, but great for strength and balance, paddle boarding is an activity that is accessible for all ages and abilities.

“Summit & Surf” are a local Mornington Peninsula business that run inclusive SUP lessons at various locations around the Peninsula.

More information about local SUP lessons and board hire can be found here:

🧪🎓✏️Our February Science Snapshot:

High Intensity Interval Training Improves Body Composition in Older Adults

A recently published study of 120 older Australians compared high, moderate and low intensity exercise to examine the effect on both body fat and muscle mass. The findings showed that while all types of exercise intensity had a beneficial effect on body fat, only high intensity exercise improved muscle mass at the same time.

This study highlights the importance of maintaining some regular vigorous efforts as we age and directly opposes the idea that we should ‘slow down’ later in life.

Check out this 7 News piece that provides more information:
