For many of Dr Craig Rubinstein’s patients who are suitable for an abdominoplasty, assisted liposuction may be carefully performed at the beginning of surgery. This is commonly directed to the outer hips, mons and central abdomen, while the upper abdomen is typically avoided due to a higher risk of complications in this area.
Once this step is complete, a low incision from hip to hip is made. The skin and tissue are gently lifted to allow access to the underlying abdominal muscles.
If a muscle separation (re**us diastasis) is present — which can occur following pregnancy — permanent sutures are used to repair the muscle layer.
Once the muscle repair is complete, the tissue is carefully pulled back down and any overlapping tissue is removed. Dr Craig will then use dissolving stitches and create a new opening so the belly button can be repositioned through the skin.
