Abdominal muscle separation, known as diastasis recti, occurs when the connective tissue (linea alba) between the left and right re**us abdominis muscles stretches and widens.
This is most commonly seen following pregnancy due to the natural expansion of the abdomen, but it can also occur with significant weight fluctuations or increased intra-abdominal pressure.
Clinically, it may present as a central abdominal bulge, reduced core strength, back discomfort, or difficulty engaging the abdominal muscles effectively. In some cases, it can also be associated with functional concerns such as reduced trunk stability.
During an abdominoplasty, muscle repair (re**us plication) may be performed where appropriate. This involves carefully suturing the re**us sheath to bring the muscles back toward the midline, which may help restore abdominal wall integrity and improve core support.
The decision to perform muscle repair depends on individual anatomy, clinical assessment, and patient goals, and is discussed in detail during consultation.
At Coco Ruby, Craig Rubinstein performs abdominoplasty procedures with a focus on tailored surgical planning and continuity of care.
