Understanding Uncertainty in OCD | OCD Awareness Week

Why does uncertainty feel so overwhelming for people with OCD?
New research co-authored by Richard Moulding, our Clinical Program Coordinator sheds light on how intolerance of uncertainty fuels obsessive–compulsive symptoms.

🔍 The study found that it’s not uncertainty alone that worsens OCD but how people respond to it.
When uncertainty triggers fears of losing control, repetitive negative thinking, or mental “checking” for reassurance, it can trap individuals in a cycle that strengthens anxiety over time.

This research helps us better understand the mental processes that keep OCD going — and points toward more targeted ways to help people break free from the grip of uncertainty.

Our Story

The Cairnmillar Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity. We have been providing counselling and mental health education to the community for nearly 60 years, including offering accredited postgraduate courses in both psychology and counselling, short courses and professional development.

Cairnmillar is an outstanding example of what psychology and psychotherapy can do for people, and for our community. Cairnmillar has established a reputation not only for itself, but for the place of psychology in helping professions. In addition, its professional and community education programs have been a high priority from the outset.
