June is Cataract Awareness Month. Cataracts are a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye which causes a progressive loss of vision. The risk of cataracts increases with age, and over 70% of Australians over 80 are diagnosed with cataracts. Younger people can also develop cataracts, risk factors include a family history, certain medications, high blood pressure, previous eye injury or inflammation, years of sun exposure, smoking and diabetes.

April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. Women have a greater risk of age-related vision loss from glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration (AMD) than men. Almost two-thirds of blindness and visual impairments occur in women[1]. Risk factors include a family history of eye diseases, social and economic factors, life expectancy and hormonal changes.

Ways to protect vision [2]

Quit smoking
Use safety eyewear

Get a comprehensive ocular exam at 40
Be aware of your family’s medical history including eye diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure
Eat a healthy low-fat diet that contains plenty of dark leafy green vegetables and cold-water fish
Wear sunglasses
See your local optometrist every 1-2 years

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that results in damage to the optic nerve affecting over 300,000 Australians. It is often asymptomatic and is typically diagnosed during a routine eye examination by an optometrist. Undiagnosed glaucoma can cause blindness, but with early detection, it can be controlled. We recommend an eye test every two years, especially if you have a family history of glaucoma. All of our eye tests include tonometry and further testing if required.
