As I set out on my long journey to becoming a qualified Nutritionist (6 years part time at Uni to gain a BSc Nutrition & Dietetics from the UoW), I thought I would create this forum where I can share insights and knowledge that I gain along the way with my friends/family/cients and seek their advice/input/feedback. I have always been interested in health and wellbeing and the role that nutrition plays. I was brought up eating home-cooked, unprocessed, balanced meals by a busy working mother. Only now that I have become a mother myself do I really appreciate the huge effort that takes. I believe that good nutrition is preventative medicine and I invest in my health by investing in organic and quality food. I was rarely sick as a child and my two children have had very few trips to the Doctors office in their short lifetimes. I also believe that the tide is turning away from prescriptive medicine - people want to take control of their health issues, not just be prescribed drugs to mask the symptoms. There is not a single day of nutrition or exercise science in the curriculum of medical studies, yet I believe more and more GPs are turning to nutritionists and naturopaths to help find a solution to chronic cases of illnesses that they have been unable to treat with pharmaceuticals alone. There is a worldwide increased demand for integrative medicine and that is what I would strive to achieve right here in my hometown on the NSW south coast in Australia. My vision is for an integrated medical practice where GPs work side-by-side on a referral basis with nutrition and natural medicine experts and I reckon by the time I qualify in 6 years, The Burgh will be ready for it!!!
