As a Nutritionist it’s exciting to see US-based nutrition models shifting toward something much closer to what I’ve been teaching my whole professional life.
Healthy fats, quality protein (including animal protein), and vegetables are at the foundation and grains are taking up far less space.
I'm loving this - because fats aren’t the enemy, they're essential.
Healthy fats are required for:
• hormone production
• nervous system health
• cell membranes
• fat-soluble vitamins, especially vitamin A (retinol)
And yet, we’re still told to choose low-fat versions of foods, which almost always means more sugar, & additives to compensate for flavour and less nourishment.
In Australia, our guidelines use a pie-chart, and there’s a lot I agree with, though I still strongly question two things:
1️⃣ the ongoing push for low-fat dairy
2️⃣ the large proportion of the plate allocated to grains
Here’s why many nutrition experts are cautious about high grain intake - even whole grains:
• Gut irritation
Gluten and other grain proteins are irritating for a lot of people, often subtly. You don’t need coeliac disease to experience inflammation, bloating, fatigue, or immune activation.
• Mineral interference
Grains contain phytates, which can reduce absorption of key minerals like zinc, magnesium, iron, and calcium.
• Blood sugar load
Even whole grains spike blood sugar. In stressed, hormonally shifting bodies (hello midlife), that can mean blood sugar swings → fatigue, anxiety, cravings, and inflammation.
• In humid climates like Australia, grains are commonly treated with fungicides and pesticides during storage.
• Gram for gram, foods like eggs, meat, seafood, and dairy provide far more bioavailable nutrients than grains ever can.
This doesn’t mean grains are “bad", but it does mean they probably don’t deserve to be the star of the plate - especially for people dealing with fatigue, gut issues, hormonal shifts, or chronic stress.
I’m genuinely curious to see whether Australia will eventually follow suit and evolve its model too.
