We just wanted to share some of the pre-reading that we set the attendees of the Cherbourg Trip 2022:
Cherbourg has a complicated history of displacement, violence and oppression but also of strength and resilience. Understanding some of the history of Cherbourg, as well as some of the impacts of the historical forced removal of First Nations people will hopefully help contextualise the upcoming trip. Whilst we have said historical forced removals, it is important to note that this process is ongoing, albeit through new government agencies such child protection services and the foster system.
Some of the following information is quite heavy so please make sure to take a moment to process what you've seen. We encourage you to discuss some of the thoughts and feelings that come up for you whilst engaging with this information with the people around you. For those of us who are settlers on this land, please take this opportunity to reflect on your responsibility to decolonise your thinking and future practice as future healthcare professionals.
