💝 Crafty idea benefits persistent pain patients 💝

A crafty initiative from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital’s (RBWH) Tess Cramond Pain and Research Centre is helping patients with persistent and chronic pain re-engage in daily activities that they enjoy.

The RIO Market Stall program was established in 2018 and encourages patients of the centre to create, market and sell handmade goods in a supportive environment.

Chronic and persistent pain is a disabling condition that places immense levels of stress on an individual, reducing their engagement in activities that bring them satisfaction and joy.

Since the program commenced as part of the LIFE program, more than 40 patients have participated with this number continuing to grow. Participants have created a range of items including jewellery, Christmas decorations and knitted goods and some have even turned their crafts into a source of income.

RBWH Occupational Therapist Linda Atkinson said the program provides an opportunity for participants to find a sense of identity and purpose which has often been put on hold due to persistent pain.

“Our consumers have multiple talents, skills and creativity and it’s extremely rewarding to see them putting these skills to use again,” Linda said.

“Participation in the program has not only had positive impacts on our patients’ psychological wellbeing, but it has improved their overall quality of life.”

See below details for the next market days, coming soon!

Dates: Monday 10th & Wednesday 12th November
Time: 9am - 2pm (both days)
Location: RBWH Level 1 Atrium (Ned Hanlon Bld - food court)

Can’t attend in person? The team are also welcoming donations to their Market fundraising page: 👉

A portion of all proceeds will be given to the RBWH Foundation to support ongoing patient care and research initiatives across the Herston Health Precinct.

Did you know it takes 9000 staff, the population of a small town, to keep Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) running? 🏥🏥

Among the most popular are the Patient Support Officers. Once known as wardies, these days more than the job title has changed.

Meet PSO Glenn Craig who spent COVID-19 ensuring the RBWH Infectious Diseases ward was spotlessly clean.

We were honoured to join the celebrations at the RBWH Staff Excellence Awards last week, recognising the incredible individuals who make our hospital community so special. 🌟

This year marked a milestone for us as we proudly presented the inaugural RBWH Foundation Impact Award to Reece Crawford - a truly remarkable ambassador for the Foundation. From visibly supporting Giving Day (including running 24 hours on a treadmill!) and Beat the Clock to sharing his personal story and inspiring others to give, Reece has gone above and beyond to make a difference. His passion, generosity and leadership have created a ripple effect that continues to advance patient care and life-saving research. 💛

We were also delighted to see our Grant Round awardees, Jen Gillies, Evelyn Nicoll, and the Dietetic Assistant Team, recognised for “Discharging with Dignity: The Food Parcel Project.” Their commitment to compassionate care shines through their work every day.

Congratulations to all RBWH Staff Excellence awardees, here’s to the people who lead with kindness and inspire positive change across RBWH 👏🏼💖.

Support RBWH Foundation to build a healthy future for Queensland

The RBWH Foundation exists to fill that funding gap. We raise funds to assist the hospital’s doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing them with the knowledge, skills and technology which may not otherwise be afforded to them due to budgetary constraints.

Money raised by RBWH Foundation is used to fund research on the campus, purchase vital pieces of equipment and enable key health professionals to attend additional training programs, conferences and seminars. It contributes to our Patient Support programs and continuing to develop our Innovative Facilities.
