🩺This , we're celebrating how the extraordinary power of giving is evolving kidney care for young patients, by highlighting a project that redefines how we support adolescent and young adults (AYA) living with kidney disease.

Young people with kidney disease often face challenges, not just medically, but emotionally and socially. To help improve this experience and their outcomes, a project led by Alexandra Cation and Brianna McCoola and proudly supported by the RBWH Foundation, identified the need to design care with these patients - not just for them.

The project brought together AYA patients, their families and clinicians to co-design the future of outpatient kidney care by understanding what matters most to young people. This collaborative process helped pave the way for creating care that is not only clinically sound but also compassionate, relevant and empowering.

RBWH Foundation grants are designed to fund research projects and patient care initiatives that improve the health and wellbeing of patients.

Some of these initiatives have included supplying appropriate clothing to patients impacted by sexual assault, domestic violence and homelessness, providing access to a virtual reality coffee shop where patients and speech pathologists can work on communication skills in a realistic setting, or offering portable radios to older patients for stimulation while hospitalised.

The generosity of our donors makes it possible to have funded these initiatives and many more that help foster positive health outcomes and wellbeing of patients. We are incredibly proud to support extraordinary opportunities in patient care.💜

Returning home after a hospital stay can be challenging, especially for patients with little or no food available. Some people live alone; others are too unwell to shop or have been discharged late in the day.

To ease this critical transition, RBWH Dietetics and Food Services has launched the Food Parcel Project, sending vulnerable patients home with two days' worth of tailored, shelf-stable food. Not only does this RBWH Foundation grant project reduce the risk of malnutrition and stress, it's providing compassionate, holistic care beyond the ward.

Dietetic Assistant Jennifer Gillies explains more about the Food Parcel Project here: https://vimeo.com/1102369144

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Jasmine Li of the Sunshine Coast Royac Dragon Fruit Farm for raising an incredible $7,150 in their fourth year of supporting the RBWH Foundation through their annual dragon fruit fundraising sale in Brisbane and Gold Coast Chinese communities on 15th February.

The funds received will help support R4LPH (Returning all the Little People Home), a NeoRESQ vehicle which transports babies from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Brisbane back home to their regional hospitals when they are well enough. Over the last 5 years, R4LPH has travelled more than 177,000 kilometres, supporting 1,968 babies and their families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

We would also like to give our sincere thanks to Mr Paul Shih, owner and CEO of Professional Real Estate Training Pty Ltd as well as his family, friends, volunteers and sponsors, for their dedicated support and philanthropic spirit to make the annual fundraising sale another success. Thank you, Paul and everyone involved, for helping us to provide life-changing patient care for the littlest patients and their families.

The NeoBuddy project came to fruition during NeoReturn Coordinator Karen's experience as a NeoRESQ (NICU) nurse. 💕

While retrieving and returning babies between RBWH and regional hospitals she noticed that when the parent/carer could not accompany their vulnerable or critically ill newborn, parents were left with no tangible object or memento of their baby's journey.

Karen explains, "It has been rewarding to see the parents/carers get some enjoyment and comfort from receiving the NeoBuddy. They proudly tell us that they will keep it to show their child as they grow and learn about their time in nursery."

We are incredibly proud to support initiatives such as the NeoBuddy that help transform and advance patient care experiences.

RBWH parents - was your baby a ‘NeoBuddy’ recipient? 🚑

The NeoBuddy is a special keepsake gifted to those families who use the Neo Return service, established in 2020, following a need to coordinate more efficient transfers between tertiary and regional hospitals. 🥰

Neo Return Coordinator Karen said the organic cotton NeoBuddy gifts are a reminder of the journey and the safe transfer of their baby.

"The service is about getting families back closer to home, familiar surroundings, community and other family members,” Karen said.

"The return vehicle, affectionately known as R4LPH (Returning All Little People Home), is also the star of the show on the NeoBuddy that we have created, which was possible with support from the RBWH Foundation."

Support RBWH Foundation to build a healthy future for Queensland

The RBWH Foundation exists to fill that funding gap. We raise funds to assist the hospital’s doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing them with the knowledge, skills and technology which may not otherwise be afforded to them due to budgetary constraints.

Money raised by RBWH Foundation is used to fund research on the campus, purchase vital pieces of equipment and enable key health professionals to attend additional training programs, conferences and seminars. It contributes to our Patient Support programs and continuing to develop our Innovative Facilities.
