-Peer support: Connecting with other families who are in the same ‘approved but waiting' stage.

What to look for and ask when choosing a care provider.

Whether you’re seeking care for yourself or organising it for a loved one, finding the right fit is essential. Here are four questions to help you or your family evaluate any potential care provider:

1. Who will be coming into the home? Ask if support will be provided by a dedicated, small team. This ensures that everyone involved has the peace of mind that comes with seeing a friendly, familiar face at every visit.

2. How much of the budget goes toward actual care? A clear breakdown of service costs versus management fees should be looked into to ensure the funding is being maximised for direct, hands-on support.

3. How much control is there over the schedule? Does you or your loved one have the ability to choose the timing of visits, and if so, how much notice is needed to change a routine for a family event or a last-minute appointment?

4. What happens if needs change suddenly? Ask how quickly the care provider can scale services up or down, and whether they can help navigate a Support Plan Review if health or well-being needs shift.

Choosing a care provider is about more than just checking boxes - it’s about finding a care partner who respects independence and understands the mental load.
