Christmas Day can be comforting for some, and incredibly hard for others, especially when someone you love is missing from the table.

If today feels heavy, please know you’re not alone. There’s no correct way to do Christmas Day while grieving. You might join in, step away, cry, laugh, or simply get through the hours as quietly as you need to.

If it helps, consider one small moment of remembrance, a candle, a toast, a favourite photo, or saying their name out loud. Love still belongs here, even in the ache.

From all of us at Ross Funerals, we’re thinking of families across Maryborough, Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast today, and holding space for those missing someone especially dearly. 🤍🎄

Not sure what to say to someone who’s grieving this Christmas? Here are a few things that genuinely help:

❤️ Say their person’s name (it won’t “remind” them, they already remember)
❤️ Offer something specific: “I can drop dinner on Thursday” beats “Let me know if you need anything”
❤️ Be okay with tears, they don’t need fixing
❤️ Check in after Christmas, that’s when the quiet often hits hardest

Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is simply being present.

If you know someone doing it tough in Maryborough, Hervey Bay, or the wider Fraser Coast, a small kindness can mean the world. 🤍

For many, Christmas is full of noise, food, and family. But if you’re grieving, it can feel very different, quieter, heavier, and sometimes overwhelming.

If this is your first Christmas without someone you love (or even your tenth), please know there’s no “right” way to get through the day. You might choose to keep traditions, change them, or skip them altogether. All of that is okay.

A gentle idea for today: light a candle, play their favourite song, visit a special place, or simply speak their name. Love doesn’t disappear at Christmas, it shows up in new ways.

From all of us at Ross Funerals, we’re sending warmth to families across Maryborough and Hervey Bay, and especially to those carrying someone in their heart this season. 🎄🤍

Do you know you can find us at the Maryborough Markets every Thursday?

Yes—we hear your jokes!

“I’m not ready for you yet!”
“Business must be quiet if the funeral directors are here!”

Don’t worry, we laugh every time. 😊

But the real reason we’re there is simple: we want to stay connected and accessible to our community. Talking about funerals and end-of-life planning can feel confronting, so the markets offer a relaxed environment to stop by, say hello, and Ask Ross anything you’ve ever wondered but never asked.

Whether you’re planning ahead, curious about costs, or just want to better understand how things work, we’re here for open, honest and helpful conversations.

Come chat with us about:
• Pre-paying your funeral at today’s prices
• Alternatives to funeral insurance that may be more cost-effective
• Our upcoming Community Christmas Memorial Service
• Funeral costs—transparency is important to us
• Any big or little question you’ve always wanted to ask

No pressure. No formalities. Just people from your community, ready to chat, support and share information.

So wander over, have a yarn, and Ask Ross.

We look forward to seeing you at the markets.

At Ross Funerals, our connection to the Maryborough community spans generations. Since performing our very first funeral on 7 February 1955, we have walked alongside local families through moments of loss, remembrance, and reflection.

Today, we’re proud to share a behind-the-scenes look at something very special, our newly built file archive room here in Maryborough.

These shelves hold decades of handwritten funeral records, carefully kept and preserved by our team. While there is no legal requirement for us to retain such extensive historical documentation, we choose to do so because we understand how deeply valuable these records can be. For many families, they are a bridge to the past, helping with genealogy, family research, and the honouring of stories that deserve to be remembered.

Maintaining this archive is one of the many quiet ways we serve our community… ensuring that the history of Maryborough families is never lost.

If you ever require assistance with family research, our team is here to help where we can.
