Over the past six years I have been writing a book and creating a new website to help people unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with cancer.

When my dear Mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, I quickly realised there was a huge gap in the availability of valuable information which could help someone with cancer outside of the realms of traditional treatments.

As a result, I have spent the past seven years researching and changing my focus in my nutrition practice to helping cancer patients and created a one stop resource in the form of a book and website with lots of free information and resources.

If you would like to know more, please watch my video and visit my new website, www.controllingtheodds.com.

Thanks for your support!
Matt

Growing your own veggie garden has incredible benefits!
Though growing your own vegetables can seem overwhelming to some, it’s actually much simpler than it sounds. Even if you don’t have a yard, consider starting a patio garden or even an indoor herb garden on a windowsill. You’ll be amazed at how many tomatoes or peppers you can grow out of one pot!

If you still aren’t convinced, consider these benefits of backyard gardening:

👉Improve your health. Consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. When you pick vegetables right from your garden, the vitamin content will be at its highest. Also, you are reducing the risk of eating vegetables that contain harmful chemicals–you know exactly what you're eating.

👉Save on groceries. One of the benefits of enjoying garden vegetables is a reduced monthly food bill. You can grow organic vegetables for a fraction of the cost in the stores.

👉Get outdoor . Gardening is a physical activity and pulling weeds, planting, and digging can burn up to 400 calories per hour. Gardening is also a good mental exercise and helps keep your mind sharp.

👉Gardening is a natural reliever. Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine can improve mood and make you feel rejuvenated and overall happy. Growing your own produce also gives you a great sense of accomplishment.

Should you or veggies?

Boiling and steaming are both popular cooking methods, and knowing the pros and cons of each can help you prepare vegetables in a way that preserves their , color and .

👉What happens when you boil vegetables?
During the cooking process, some nutrients leach out of the vegetables and into the cooking water. The longer they cook, the more nutrients escape. Overcooking also dulls color and flavor.

👉What happens when you steam ?
Steamed veggies are cooked briefly and then removed from the heat. The goal of steaming is to cook the vegetables until they are no longer raw, but still bright and crisp. This preserves color and flavor, and some of the nutrient content.

Although raw vegetables contain plenty of nutrients, cooking your veggies may actually make it easier for your body to absorb those beneficial substances. Breaking down the outer layers and cellular structures of some vegetables increases the amount of certain nutrients available within those veggies -- for example, beta carotene in and . When preparing veggies, steaming is preferable to boiling because the veggies remain separate from the hot water, allowing them to retain more nutrients in the cooking process.

Which Foods Speed Up Recovery After Surgery?

Recovery speed and effectiveness after are largely determined by what we eat. Not only does our body need more to , but surgery also causes a stress reaction in the body that elevates the and increases our need for calories. If we don’t fuel our recovery with the proper , complications are more likely to arise.

🎯Here are top 4 recommendations:

👉Protein – soy, dairy, beans, eggs, cottage cheese, poultry, fish, meat, and nuts are all excellent sources of protein.

👉Vitamin C – vitamin C helps your body make collagen. When your body is recovering, it needs healthy connective tissue and collagen is what those ligaments and tendons are made of. Citrus fruits, vegetables, and berries, can help ensure you get enough vitamin C.

👉Calcium – this mineral is not made in the body and our bones are continually losing small amounts of it, so we need to consume calcium to maintain strong bones. Dairy like milk, cheese, and yogurt are often the sources we think of first, but chew on this: spinach, kale, and chia seeds are loaded with even more calcium.

👉Vitamin D – this nutrient makes sure we can absorb calcium from the food we eat and can be found in orange juice, almond milk, and many of the same foods that contain protein and calcium.

While these foods help your body recover after , their positive effects can be canceled out by other foods. Make sure to avoid , , excessive , and as they can all slow healing by depleting your body of nutrients.
