Here's something you can do at home or at the park to enjoy nature, for free.
1. Find a mulched area, bring a magnifying glass if you have one.
2. Use a stick or your hand to gently scrape back the mulch to expose the dirt underneath.
3. Look. Watch. Wait.
4. You'll see critters/ minibeasts galore.
5. Discuss why they live in the mulch and what they do (older kids).
6. Put the mulch back.
Some animals freeze, so waiting means you have more chance of seeing them.
Some go into flight mode, trying to get away.
We did this on Friday at Nature Playgroup and we were surprised how many minibeasts we saw!
Beetle
Witchety grub
Worm
Millipede
Many others we have no idea of the species but we got curious!
We also looked for cicada shells, and found HEAPS on the trees nearby!
This is us looking for Ant Lions and checking the mulch with 1-4yo.
