Sirovilla’s 53rd Annual General Meeting

Yesterday afternoon, Sirovilla held its 53rd Annual General Meeting, presided over by Sirovilla Chair Cynthia Scherer and attended by the Sirovilla Board of Directors, Life Members, including former Sirovilla Manager Nola Fort, former Board Chairs Dennis Barker, Joy Leggo, and Kate Kerkin, along with several valued external partners and guests, including Austin Paterson of the Percy Baxter Charitable Trust, Kathy Russell of Bellarine Community Health, Emma Chessell of Geelong Sustainability, Dexter Magpantay of Winki Energy, and Russell Mathews of Too Hot to Handle Heating & Cooling.

We were honoured to welcome Deputy Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong and Councillor for the Barrabool Hills Ward, Cr Ron Nelson, Barrabool Hills Ward who once again joined us for the occasion.

Thank you to everyone who attended and demonstrated their ongoing support for Sirovilla.

It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on another year of progress and shared purpose as we continue to provide safe, affordable, long-term "lease-for-life" housing for seniors across our four villages in Highton, Anglesea, Lorne and Point Lonsdale.

NEIL TOLLIDAY REMEMBERED
We are saddened to share that Neil Tolliday has passed away. Neil was the son of Eric Tolliday, after whom the Sirovilla Point Lonsdale units were named - The Eric Tolliday Units. Our thoughts are with Neil's wife, Marg, and the Tolliday family at this time.

Neil's father, Eric Tolliday, was a highly respected community member who dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Queenscliff and District Memorial Hospital Society and the Queenscliff and District Community Health Centre. His outstanding contribution was honoured through the naming of these units, which were first opened in two stages during the early 1980s.

When the units were redeveloped by Sirovilla and reopened, Neil and Marg Tolliday, along with several members of the Tolliday family, joined the celebrations in March 2024 (picture below) and helped plant a commemorative tree alongside Sirovilla and Bellarine Community Health representatives on the grounds of Sirovilla Point Lonsdale - Eric Tolliday Units. Neil expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Tolliday family, congratulating everyone involved in bringing the project to life.

Neil’s passing marks the close of a remarkable family chapter, but the Tolliday legacy continues here in Point Lonsdale — in the community, homes and spirit that bear his father’s name.

With heartfelt sympathy
The Sirovilla Team

The latest Grattan Institute’s Renting in Retirement Report (Feb 2025), paints a sobering picture for one group; retirees who rent in the private market. Two-thirds of this group live in poverty, including more than three in four single women living alone.

Retirees who rent often have little in the way of retirement savings: more than half have less than $25,000 stashed away, and a growing number of older Australians are at risk of becoming homeless.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a greater percentage of Geelong’s population is aged over 65 years than Melbourne. Many live on limited income and affordable rental accommodation, defined as costing a maximum of 30% of gross income, can be difficult to find in Geelong.

Locally, the City of Greater Geelong’s Housing Plan reports that 26% of private renters are in housing stress (spending over 30% of income on rent). Households experiencing rental stress are generally considered to be more at risk of homelessness than households experiencing mortgage stress as they are at risk of eviction for non-payment of rent, are at risk of rent increases at the discretion of the landlord, as well as adverse actions by landlords.

The 2025 Sirovilla Rental Market Monitor - which samples private rental units in areas surrounding Sirovilla villages shows 97% of 1 bed rentals for singles and 100% of 2 bed rentals for couples would place those on an aged pension in housing stress, with the rent on 89% of all units representing 30% to 59% of a person on an aged pension’s weekly income.

Sirovilla provides low cost long-term community housing for seniors aged 67+ across four villages - Highton, Anglesea, Point Lonsdale and Lorne, - for those able to live independently. Unlike traditional retirement villages, residents are offered 1 or 2-bed units under a secure “leased for life” model, allocated by application order.

Many residents enter Sirovilla with minimal savings and rely solely on the aged pension. Rent is capped at 25% of income plus the Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA), equivalent to 60% of market rent on the Surf Coast and 71% in Highton.

Sirovilla residents frequently express relief at finding a safe, secure and long-term home at Sirovilla. In our 2025 Resident Survey, 100% of residents rated security of tenure and rental affordability as important, or very important, with 80% and 79% respectively rating them as very important.

🚨 Scam Alert for Age Pensioners 🚨

My office has received a number of inquires from constituents regarding an aged pension scam. Services Australia has issued a warning of a fake scam claiming a June 15 deadline for ID verification to avoid pension freezes. This is FALSE. There are no changes to Age Pension payments, eligibility, or ID checks.

Always verify info through official channels: Services Australia website, myGov, or their verified social media. Stay safe and don’t share your personal info with scammers!
