Join me for A Gentle Retreat - November 17th - 20th

It beckons those seeking solace, a chance to decelerate, and simplify the complexities of life. A space where movement and breath intertwine in gentle harmony, coaxing our bodies and minds to unravel their tightly spun fibres and stories.

Spend your weekend secluded in the wilderness of the southern Tasmanian coastline, overlooking the sea to Bruny Island.
This retreat embraces a spacious atmosphere of self-exploration through yoga and meditation. A weekend of embodied movement and stillness, steeped in breath.

We reside in a world perpetually gripped by exhaustion and overstimulation. You deserve time to unwind.

A gentle retreat curated to guide you home to your deepest sense of self.

As you rest in the depths of winter, what small flame are you tending to inside?

What are you growing, creating, cultivating as you move into this next cycle?

Winter is our supported time to slow down, rest and conserve our energy.

The cooler and darker days invite this meditative space to rest and reflect. Both the perfect and necessary time to replenish your sources that you’ve used throughout the year.

Winter is the most yin of all of the seasons, and it invites a potent energy of depth and renewal.

During menstruation or your inner winter, your body might be calling you towards slowness: staying close to home, going to bed early, taking naps and generally turning inward.

It's the same energy that winter invites.

With the drop of oestrogen and progesterone we may find that energy drops too — we may even feel clumsy or perhaps a little vague... like words are harder, we are less logical; more sensitive, more feeling.

Now is not the time for running, building, problem solving or pushing. Now is the time for rest.

Embrace the flow of life guided by your menstrual cycle.

Embark on a journey to comprehend and interpret the intricate language spoken by your body, delving into the profound wisdom anchored within you.

Our bodies possess innate sagacity, and every aspect is purposefully present.

As we grasp the art of aligning our lives with the harmonious cadence of our inner nature, we not only cultivate a sustainable and harmonised existence but also foster the healing of our connection with our bodies.

Through this process, we acquire the ability to wholeheartedly embrace our physical being and relish the sheer pleasure of inhabiting our own skin.

Whether we realise it or not, we live in a world that was not designed for us. The vast majority of our social and shared spaces were not designed with the changing nature of the menstruating body in mind. In reality, they were designed by men, for existence in the male body. This means we are often expected to show up and ‘perform’ the same each day of the week, month or year.

As cyclical beings, such a demand proves neither feasible nor sustainable for us.

It can lead to an assortment of undesirable consequences, including resenting our own biology, feeling detached from our bodies and emotions, experiencing pain, disharmony, and exhaustion.

When we adjust our lives to work with our cycle, rather than pushing against it, we reclaim our connection to our bodies. We become self-sovereign.

We acquire the ability to track our cycles for conception or contraception. We discover the revolutionary act of embracing rest, challenging the systems that seek to confine us.

We cultivate a sense of belonging within our own skin, which grants us access to an inherent power and wisdom that has always resided within us.

In respecting and aligning with our bodies natural rhythm, our lives become more fulfilling and sustainable.

Nadi shodhana, also known as alternate nostril breathing, is a simple pranayama technique that can be used by anyone, through any phase of the menstrual cycle and all throughout pregnancy.

‘Nadi’ refers to the energy channels in the body.
‘Shodhana’ means cleansing or purification.

The two nadis we are primarily working with are:
Ida ~ the feminine, lunar, yin channel (left).
Pingala ~ the masculine, solar, yang channel (right).

Through this breathing technique (pranayama) we balance these two energies in the body, slow the breath down, and at the same time we down-regulate the nervous system.

The Five Prana Vayus:
At its core, yoga is more than physical shapes and postures. Yoga is energetics. When we are working with the physical body, what we are really doing is manipulating and managing prana, the vital life force that exists within everything.

Blog post on the prana vayus is up on the House of Aeon journal.

Here in the southern hemisphere autumn is well and truly here, (it's really very cold here in Tasmania) and as the yang energy and warmth of summer wanes, the rising energy of yin encourages us to move more completely into this season and embrace our own natural instinct to hibernate. To really slow down. To turn our attention inward and prepare for the cooler, slower, darker months ahead. It's one of my favourite times of year. The hard part is actually allowing myself to slow down.

The dominant element of autumn is metal and the organs governing this season are lung and large intestine. The lungs are responsible for bringing life into our body and our large intestine are responsible for helping us let go of what we don’t need.
When these organs are in balance, we have a good relationship with our breath.
We can grieve in a healthy way, and let go (*when we are ready) with gentleness and acceptance; yet hold onto memories that are important and dear to us.

Just like metal, we want to be strong yet malleable.
We have boundaries, but we are not too rigid.

*Stephanie Nosco says "trying to 'let go' prematurely or saying things like 'everything happens for a reason' are ways we downplay grief."

So, through the season of autumn, we gently allow thing to fall away as we contract towards winter. We want to work with calming vata, supporting the lung and large intestine meridians, supporting our spinal health (always) and as we turn inward, we go back to basics to refine our practice and reset stable foundations for the future. Both physically and energetically.

Hello, I'm Hayley (she/her).
I created House of Aeon to support the ones who feel like vinyasa seven days of the week isn’t sustainable anymore.
The ones who want more than asana; who want meditation, pranayama and the yin side of the practice; who want to dive deeper from the comfort of their own home.

In my early twenties, I thought I could (and should) practice the same type of yoga every day. A strong, sweaty vinyasa class was it. Even on those days where my body said no, I would drag myself out of bed and onto my mat. As I got older, I couldn't understand why I was tired all the time. Why I lacked inspiration or felt like a failure because I had no consistency.

This idea that we are to be productive all the time, or that we should be able to show up the same every day is truly absurd. If we look to nature, we see that there is a time for dynamism, for 'doing' - yang energy; and by the same token, there is a time for rest, for being - yin energy.
It's the same within our bodies.

So now, my yoga practice changes both seasonally, as the earth moves, and daily as my body shifts through the hormonal phases of my cycle.

Learning to live within the cycle of nature not only reconnects us to it, it reminds us that we are a part of it. We reclaim access to a sustainable way of being, we actually become more consistent, on a wider level. Inspiration returns and there is the deeper understanding of the self that is steeped in compassion.

You are cyclical.
Let your practice be too.

I created House of Aeon to support you through the cycles of life and time.
