Be my Co-Therapist

Be my Co-Therapist This page is hosted by Psychology and Play Therapy Australia. We’re committed to supporting careg

At Psychology and Play Therapy Australia, we believe that children develop in the context of their attachment relationships, and that the most effective change occurs for children when their important adults are involved in the change process. So our model of care actively engages parents/caregivers and education staff as our co-therapist – Be My Co-TherapistTM. Our goal is to resource YOU with information and support to enable YOU to be the parent/caregiver you want to be for your child. We know that parenting your child's unique therapeutic needs can be as much challenging and exhausting as it is rewarding. We'll support you to deeply understand your child's therapeutic needs, make sense of their therapy goals, and apply specific therapeutic approaches at home that are consistent with your child's unique needs. You'll also notice that our page emphasises the important role of play in children's development. That's because we know that one of the main ways children learn, develop, and make sense of themselves and their experiences is during their process of play. Curiosity, connection and playfulness - at the heart of our approaches to therapy and parenting/caregiving!

With day 1 of the Play Therapy 2023 Conference complete, we are feeling particularly inspired to advocate for play!

Have you ever heard an adult say, “they are just playing”?

We are very passionate about busting this myth!
Play is a child’s developmental superpower!

Within play, children have an arena where they practice the integration of many skills, including attention and regulation, physical, social, cognitive (e.g. logical and sequential thinking), and problem-solving. They encounter emotional experiences and opportunities for collaboration and co-operation.

Plus... play is fun!

Children are motivated to repeatedly engage in play, and through repetition, children strengthen their own neural connections... this is learning!
Play fosters the development of a child’s sense of self, and capacity to be adaptive and flexible in the face of problems.

The brain and body are both engaged while a child plays, allowing them to have a holistic and embodied experience.

Play is a primary developmental task, and they need to have plenty of access to it to best support their development.

** MONDAY CURIOSITY **
Are emotions any different?

Practice, practice, practice!
When we think of our physical body and these skills, we can often reflect on practice.
No one learnt to ride a bike overnight, but we all got better over time the more we attempted it.

Would you expect your child to learn their times tables instantly?

We are guessing there are a lot of mistakes and frustration in that learning process.

Are emotions any different?

Before a child can regulate themselves and properly engage with and understand their emotions, they must first co-regulate with their parents.

Through observation, modelled experiences, and active reflection, children slowly develop the skills to understand and manage their emotions.

Parents can be thought of as emotional training wheels!
