This week the RACGP released its annual Health of the Nation report in Canberra, highlighting the current state of General Practice across Australia and how we can use this information to inform primary health policy.

It was a privilege to be part of yesterday’s RACGP Tasmanian Fellowship and Awards Ceremony at the University of Tasmania Medical Science Precinct.

I was joined by RACGP President Dr Michael Wright as we celebrated our newest Fellows who are doing amazing work in General Practice across the state.

The inaugural Professor Peter Mudge oration by the incredible Dr Lizzie Elliott highlighted the diversity of General Practice and was an inspiration to our new GPs.

Tasmanian Health Minister Bridget Archer gave a rousing toast, recognising the vital role GPs play in the health and wellbeing of our Tasmanian communities.

Congratulations to all of the graduating Fellows; your dedication and perseverance in attaining Fellowship of the RACGP is to be applauded. Well done!

It was such a pleasure to host RACGP Rural Faculty Chair A/Prof Michael Clements in Northern Tasmania today.

We started the day at Newstead Medical and the Urgent Care Centre, before heading north to visit Dr Prashanth Reddy at Beaconsfield Family Medical Practice, the 2024 Tasmanian Practice of the Year.

Over lunch at the University of Tasmania UTAS Launceston Clinical School, we celebrated UTAS being ranked number 1 nationally for producing rural GPs. It was a fantastic opportunity to chat with medical students across all stages of their training and share insights about life as a regional and rural GP.

Thanks to everyone who joined us; the future of general practice in Tasmania is looking bright. 🌿

Today is World Family Doctor Day!

It’s a day to celebrate the incredible role GPs play in providing continuous, compassionate care—often from a patient’s very first steps through to their golden years.

At the heart of it all? Relationships, trust, and the privilege of walking alongside our patients through life’s many chapters.

We truly love what we do—and honestly, we couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Here’s to all the GPs making a difference every single day!

Female GPs now make up a larger proportion of Australia's GP workforce. However, gender inequity still exists, especially pronounced for women from diverse backgrounds.

Women GPs also spend longer with their patients because they see more people with complex needs.

The RACGP will continue to advocate for increased rebates for longer consultations to help reduce the pay inequity between male and female GPs, as we push to eliminate gender bias in healthcare.

The most incredible and inspiring woman in my life is my lifelong partner, who continues to endlessly support and strengthen me, simultaneously managing everything around me every day.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Last week I joined 20 dedicated GPs from RACGP in Canberra advocating for more affordable and accessible healthcare.

We met with key representatives who provided great reception to our plan to build a stronger GP workforce and healthier communities.

It’s always a privilege to spend time with such a committed team working to advance healthcare in Australia.

Today I was joined by Professor Tony Lawler, Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Chief Medical Officer and University of Tasmania alumni, who was back in Tasmania to present to occasional address at the UTAS Medical School Class of 2024 graduation ceremony.

It was inspiring for our students to hear from Tony, who has made his way from UTAS and then working as an ED physician in Hobart, to now being the highest medical officer in the country.

Congratulations to our new graduates, we can’t wait to see how far you all go! 🎓

The RACGP spent this week in Parliament launching our annual Health of the Nation report, as well as advocating for a range of initiatives to strengthen Medicare.

We also shared the good news that all 1500 GP training places have filled across Australia for 2025, the first time in almost a decade! With 1 in 4 GPs planning to retire in the next 5 years, we now need to open up more training positions to expand our future GP workforce to manage our growing and aging population.

I was also lucky enough to witness former Premier Peter Gutwein’s arrival in Canberra after walking 330km from Sydney, to highlight the importance of multiculturalism in creating a strong and vibrant country.

It’s certainly been a busy and productive week in the Capital!

We were the leading news story in Nightly News 7 Tasmania yesterday!

It was such an honour to celebrate our 40 newest RACGP fellows at Menzies Institute for Medical Research yesterday, along with our award winners and lifetime members.

This week at the medical deans conference, University of Tasmania was announced as one of the top 3 universities in training future GPs, with a larger proportion of graduating medical students pursuing General Practice as a career than other universities. With a GP as Head of School and GPs leading each of the Clinical Schools at UTAS, the future of General Practice in Tasmania is looking bright.

Thanks to all who made this day such a roaring success, including our training team, local and national executive team and Vice President Michael Clements for joining us in Hobart. Thanks also to Health Minister Guy Barnett and Shadow Health Minister Ella Haddad MP for being a part of such a momentous day.

And the biggest congratulations go to our newest Fellows. We hope you have as fulfilling a career in General Practice as I have, helping to advance the health of our Tasmanian population.
