A-Z of mental health:
We’re up to B - for bipolar disorder.

It’s normal to experience a range of emotions in our lives. Emotions can be affected by the things going on around us, things going on with family or friends, stressful events, or sometimes by nothing at all.

These ups and downs are common and generally don’t cause too many problems. They can build our resilience, help us to learn how to manage difficult situations, and prepare for any highs and lows of the future.

Bipolar disorder is different to general mood changes or anger outbursts. Mood changes associated with bipolar disorder are more extreme, last longer and have a significant impact on someone’s ability to function as they normally would.

It can be tough to cope, but with the right support, things can get better.

Happy Lunar New Year and welcome to the Year of the Fire Horse!

Did you know that there are 12 animals in the zodiac, and five elements, meaning each animal-element pairing appears just once every 60 years?

The fire horse last appeared in 1966 and combines two extremely dynamic symbols in the calendar.

Lunar New Year is not only a time for celebration, but also an opportunity to reflect on ways to nurture your family’s wellbeing in the coming year. Share our resources with your young person to help them connect with their cultural roots and look after their mental health: https://bit.ly/40CArJE.

New year, new me. Let's have another go at the A-Z of mental health - never did make it to the end of the alphabet when we tried a couple of years ago - so it would seem quite apt to start with A...DHD.

ADHD -attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - can affect a person's ability to focus, pay attention and control impulses or restlessness, and it can impact our ability to do things like study and work.

The good news is there are lots of ways to manage the challenges that can come with ADHD. There are plenty of strategies, support, and treatments available to help people manage their symptoms, embrace their strengths, and live rewarding, and meaningful lives.

For some of us, party season isn’t over yet — so remember to stay safe. If you’re drinking or using other drugs:

👉 pace yourself and know your limits
👉 eat beforehand and drink that water
👉 avoid mixing your substances
👉 never feel pressured — your choice matters
👉 look out for your mates and get home safe.

Fun nights start with looking after yourself. If you'd like to talk to someone about cutting back on your alcohol or other drug use, we can help by supporting you with heathy decision making, as well as ways to reduce your risk. Check out https://headspace.org.au/explore-topics/for-young-people/limit-alcohol-and-other-drugs/ or get in touch on 6231 2927 or headspace@thelink.org.au to make an appointment.
