Last month, VisAbility Tasmania hosted two Cyber Security Workshops in Hobart and Launceston as part of the Australian Government’s Act Now, Stay Secure initiative.

These sessions were designed to help people with vision impairment understand and respond to online risks such as scams and cyber threats, while learning to protect their devices, data, and privacy.

Accessibility adds an extra layer of complexity for our community, so these workshops were not only a great opportunity to learn practical solutions but also a chance for clients to share experiences and exchange valuable tips.

A big thank you to the Australian Department of Home Affairs for supporting these important workshops, and to our Assistive Technology Mentor, Jordan Bush, for leading the session.

Together, we’re building a safer, more connected digital world for everyone.

As a valued partner of Intopia we are seeking your assistance to participate in the survey below.

Intopia in partnership with Disability Advocacy Groups and Round Table on Information Access for People with Print Disabilities, is inviting people in Australia or New Zealand, aged 18 and over, who use assistive technology or adjust device settings to complete tasks online, to take part in the Assistive Technology Survey 2025.

Now in its third year, this is the most comprehensive survey across both countries examining how assistive technology is used online. It explores emerging trends, including the growing influence of AI and gathers real-world experiences to help shape better policy, product design and accessibility innovation.

If you use assistive technology or adaptive strategies, your insights are vital. The survey is accessible, anonymous and open from 3 December 2025 to 6 February 2026.

Your participation will help build a more inclusive and equitable digital future for everyone.

Phil was united with his first Guide Dog when he was 16 – beautiful Faye.

Faye gave him freedom and confidence he had never had before. Today with Dudley, his seventh Guide Dog, Phil is such a highly experienced handler, he is called on to help out in the blind and low vision community. Dudley takes Phil to work every day and helps walk his son to school. And he is Phil’s best friend.

“I like to help out the community where I can. I talk to people, show them what I’ve learned over the years, and especially talk about technology, because these days, technology and vision loss goes hand in hand. It’s so accessible and so good for us.”

There are countless people in the community getting out and about, building confidence, enjoying greater freedom, thanks to Guide Dogs Tasmania and VisAbility Tasmania - and people like you.

More Tasmanians are waiting for their own Guide Dog, and the advice and support they need from VisAbility. You can bring joy and independence this festive season. Please give before December 25 and change lives forever: https://www.visabilitytas.com.au/latest-news/2025-christmas-appeal-phil-and-dudley/

“People like you have given me possibility, and I will never be able to thank you enough.”

Phil was just six when he lost his sight to cancer. He was diagnosed with a cancer in the eye called Retinoblastoma at the age of three, and unfortunately, chemotherapy treatment didn’t work.

Now blind for 51 years, Phil has witnessed so many advances in technology and services, and extraordinary changes in support for people who live with low or no vision.

Phil had his first cane at age 10, his first Guide Dog at 16. He had orientation and mobility and technology support to move out of home at 20. He’s an expert user of assistive technology for navigation, communication and the workplace.

Phil’s built a busy, fulfilling career, and worked with seven different Guide Dogs. He’s a loving husband and dad. And every step of the way, he’s had VisAbility and Guide Dogs Tasmania at his side.

Phil’s life is filled with greater independence, freedom and hope, because of people like you – and he wants your help so more Tasmanians can experience support that truly changes lives.

You could help create a future of freedom and independence for more people like Phil. Find out more: https://www.visabilitytas.com.au/2025-christmas-appeal-phil-and-dudley/

BLIND LOVE AUSTRALIA - casting call
Casting applications are now open for a brand-new documentary series in development, Blind Love Australia.
The producers of Blind Love Australia are looking for single blind and vision impaired Tasmanians in their 20s – 40s who are ready to put themselves out there in the search for love.
Based on the PBS web series, Blind Love, the series will follow six blind and vision impaired Australians in their quest for love. With the support of family and friends, each is determined to find "the one". Each participant seeks to be seen and understood for who they truly are. They don’t want pity, they want meaningful, lasting relationships.
Blind Love Australia will be a fun, warm, candid, and uplifting series that will challenge stereotypes, and debunk myths about what it means to be blind. Their goal is to amplify voices from a population that is often overlooked and showcase the lives of participants authentically beyond their vision impairment.
