It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting the way we communicate.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the habits they didn’t realise they had until they worked closely with people with low or no vision...

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how often people point, or say ‘over there,’ instead of giving clear verbal directions.”

It’s so automatic, until you realise how many people it leaves out.

A small swap makes a big difference:
• “Two steps to your left”
• “It’s on the table in front of you, near the edge”
• “The doorway is at 2 o’clock”

What’s something you never noticed before learning about low vision?

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting tools that support independence.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the things they didn’t know before joining VisAbility and working with people with low or no vision.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed that an air fryer could talk to me.”

Talking appliances aren’t novelty gadgets. For many people living with low or no vision, features like voice prompts, tactile buttons, and accessible displays make everyday tasks safer and more achievable.

Our Assistive Technology team helps people explore tools just like this, including accessible products available through our Resource Centre.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re paying closer attention to the things many of us once overlooked.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the everyday things they never noticed before working at VisAbility….

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how much meaning comes from facial expressions in a conversation.”

A raised eyebrow. A quick smile. A “are you serious?” look. So much of what we say lives between the words.

It’s a good reminder for us to be more intentional when communicating with someone with low or no vision. Try to say the reaction out loud, to check in, and to make space for clarity - not assumptions.

Practice communication that includes everyone.

Tasmanian Disability Inclusion Plan – have your say!

Registrations are now open for in-person and online consultation sessions on Tasmania’s first Disability Inclusion Plan.

The voices and ideas from people with disability, the disability sector, carers, families, and the broader Tasmanian community matter. Your contribution will help shape a strong plan for an inclusive future for all Tasmanians with disability.

Webinars begin from 3 February and cover three topics: Tasmanian Government services, accessible communication and consultation, and safeguarding.

In-person sessions are being held in Hobart, Launceston, and Ulverstone from 12 - 19 February.

Can’t make a session? You can also complete a survey or make a submission in a format of your choice.

More details, including venues and the registration link, are available on the Tasmanian Disability Inclusion Plan consultation page: https://www.dpac.tas.gov.au/divisions/cpp/community-and-disability-services/tasmanian-disability-inclusion-plan-consultation

We’re excited to share that Quantum RLV will be visiting our Hobart and Launceston offices next week!

This is a great opportunity to explore the latest assistive technology that supports people living with vision impairment.

Their representative, Stewart, will be showcasing a range of new and well‑known products, including the Mirror Pad, Luna Eye, Snow Pad, BlindShell 3 phone, Mountbatten Tutor, and a selection of desktop magnifiers, as pictured in use with our Assistive Tech, Jordan (subject to availability).

You can join us in Hobart on Wednesday 18 February from 1pm - 3pm, or Launceston on Friday 20 February from 10am - 11am

📍 164 Elizabeth Street, Hobart
📍 259 Hobart Road, Youngtown

These informal drop‑in sessions are a chance to have hands‑on time with products, ask questions, and learn what technology may best support your independence.

Low Vision Awareness Month isn’t just about sight - it’s about attention.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the subtle everyday moments they didn’t realise mattered until they began working alongside people with low or no vision. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing these reflections…

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed that conversations and meetings are hard to follow if you can’t see who’s talking.”

When voices overlap or speakers change without introduction, it can be difficult and disorienting for someone who relies on sound alone to track a discussion. Simple habits like saying your name before you speak, describing who you’re responding to, or taking turns more intentionally can create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month.

Did you know we have an Assistive Technology Specialist, Jordan, who brings lived experience of low vision and understands firsthand how the right technology can support independence and confidence?

Jordan can work with you face-to-face or via telehealth to:
• Provide training in Assistive Technology
• Offer advice and information on equipment and devices
• Organise equipment trials
• Assist with the installation of software and equipment

This month, we’re practising communication and support that includes everyone.

It’s officially Low Vision Awareness Month – a timely reminder that vision loss doesn’t look the same for everyone, and neither does the support people need.

At VisAbility, we work alongside Tasmanians every day to build confidence, independence, and connection through our personalised services. From Orientation and Mobility training to Library and Braille Services, vision support is far broader than many people realise.

Did you know…
• 584 white canes were purchased across WA and Tasmania last year, a simple tool that offers thousands of people greater independence in their daily travel.
• Our Accessible Information Services Team produced 1,600 braille pages, ensuring information is accessible to those who read through touch.
• Our audio studio recorded 47 new audiobooks, expanding access to stories and learning.
• And with 26,058 book titles available through our accessible library, people with low or no vision have more choice than ever in how they read.

Let’s use this month to learn, notice, and understand more. Throughout February, we’ll be sharing more about the lived experience of low or no vision and the subtle barriers many people face every day – watch this space…

Intopia invites you to take part in the Assistive Technology Survey 2025, a survey exploring how people across Australia and New Zealand use and experience assistive technology.

Your input will help:
• Identify barriers to access and inclusion
• Inform policy and funding decisions
• Shape the design of future assistive technologies

Whether you use assistive technology yourself, or support someone who does, your voice matters. The survey is accessible, confidential and we estimate it to take around 15 to 25 minutes to complete.

The survey closing date has been extended to Friday 6 March 2023, so there’s still time! Every response helps ensure the findings reflect a broad range of assistive technology or adaptive strategies.

Take part in the survey today: https://surveys.intopia.digital/assistive-technology-survey/

In collaboration with Intopia, we thank you for helping us build a more inclusive world.

Experience the Port of Hobart on an Accessible River Cruise! 🛥️

Join TasPorts on a specially designed accessible edition of the “Tour with TasPorts” river cruise - created to make the experience clearer, calmer, and more enjoyable.

This isn’t just a cruise. It’s a guided journey into how Tasmania’s working port operates, brought to life through detailed storytelling and audio description friendly commentary.

The accessible session takes place on Monday 9 February, from 10:30am to 11:30am.

What makes this session ideal for people with vision impairment?
• A reduced capacity session: Fewer people on board means a quieter environment, easier navigation, and more time for the guide to provide clear spoken explanations
• A guide who shares rich, descriptive storytelling: You’ll hear in-depth explanations about the sights, machinery, vessels, and operations happening around you, helping you visualise the action
• Wheelchair, walker, and mobility aid friendly vessel: If you use mobility support, the vessel offers smooth, accessible movement with fewer obstacles and more space.
• Auslan interpreter: For guests who are Deafblind, the interpreter will be positioned to ensure maximum access
• Support person access: Companion Cards are accepted, making it easier to bring someone who can assist as needed.

Come along for a supportive, inclusive journey on the River Derwent, designed so everyone can experience Tasmania’s waterfront in their own way.
