Lime essential oil for drug-induced tissue injury

A recent preclinical model found that lime EO provides strong protective support for the liver and kidneys during methotrexate treatment—a drug known for organ toxicity. Oral administration of the EO helped preserve liver and kidney structure and function, reduced oxidative and inflammatory damage, protected mitochondrial health, and significantly lowered markers of cell death. Mechanistically, the oil supported the body’s natural detox and antioxidant defenses by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway while calming inflammatory signaling through JAK2/STAT3/NF-κB, pathways closely linked to drug-induced tissue injury. Overall, the findings suggest lime EO may serve as a promising natural, complementary approach to protecting organs under toxic stress, warranting further clinical exploration.
