Dementia-Friendly Activities for Meaningful Connection 💜

When a loved one is living with dementia, finding ways to connect and engage can feel challenging. But meaningful activities don't have to be complicated - often it's the simple, familiar things that bring the most joy and comfort.

Here are some dementia-friendly activities that our support workers love using:
Music and singing: Old favourite songs can spark memories and lift spirits. Whether it's playing their favourite records, singing along together, or just gentle background music, it's amazing how powerful music can be for someone with dementia.

Looking through photo albums: Photos from earlier in life can trigger conversations and happy memories. Take your time, let them lead the chat, and don't worry if the same stories come up again and again.

Sensory activities: Things like folding towels, sorting buttons, handling textured fabrics, or arranging flowers engage the hands and can be very calming. Familiar, repetitive tasks often feel comforting.

Simple crafts: Colouring in, painting, or working with clay doesn't require complicated instructions and there's no right or wrong way to do it. It's about the process, not the end result.

Gentle exercise: A slow walk around the garden, chair exercises, or simple stretching can help with mood and mobility. Fresh air and movement do wonders.
Baking or cooking together: The smell of baking biscuits or kneading dough can bring back memories and provide a sense of purpose. Even just sitting nearby and chatting while the support worker cooks can be lovely.

Reading aloud or storytelling: Short stories, poems, or even just chatting about the past can be engaging without being overwhelming.

The key is to follow their lead, keep things relaxed, and focus on connection rather than perfection. Every person with dementia is different, so it's about finding what brings them comfort and joy.

Cooking Assistance: More Than Just Meal Prep 🍽️

For many older Australians, cooking can become one of those tasks that quietly gets harder over time. Whether it's mobility issues, reduced energy, memory concerns, or just not feeling motivated to cook for one, mealtimes can become a real challenge.

That's where cooking assistance comes in, and it's about so much more than just putting a plate of food on the table.

What cooking assistance looks like:
Our caregivers can help with meal planning based on dietary needs and preferences, do the grocery shopping (or come along for company), prepare fresh meals in your loved one's own kitchen, reheat pre-made meals safely, clean up afterwards, and even just provide encouragement and companionship during mealtimes.

Why it matters:
Good nutrition is crucial for health, energy, and quality of life. When someone isn't eating properly, everything else suffers - mood, strength, immunity, and independence. Cooking assistance helps ensure your loved one is getting nutritious, enjoyable meals without the stress or physical strain.

It's also about connection:
Mealtimes are social. Having someone there to chat with while cooking or eating can make all the difference, especially for those living alone. It turns a chore into something to look forward to.

If your loved one is skipping meals, losing weight, or just not enjoying food like they used to, cooking assistance might be exactly what they need.

Benefits of In-Home Care vs Residential Care 🏡

Choosing the right care option for your loved one is a big decision, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

In-home care allows your loved one to stay in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by familiar belongings and memories. They can maintain their independence, keep their daily routines, and stay close to family, friends, and even their pets. It's personalised, one-on-one support that fits around their lifestyle, and families can visit whenever they like.

Residential care, on the other hand, offers 24/7 nursing support, structured activities, and social opportunities with other residents. It's ideal for those with higher care needs or complex medical conditions, and it takes the pressure off families who may not be able to provide full-time care.

The right choice really depends on your loved one's needs, preferences, and the level of support required. Some people thrive at home with the right help, while others benefit from the structure and social environment of residential care.

We're here to help you work through your options and find what's best for your family.

It's not always easy to know when it's time to arrange additional care for someone you love. Changes can be gradual, and families often don't realise how much things have shifted until something happens.

Here are some signs that extra support at home might be helpful:
They're struggling with daily tasks. Things like cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, or managing medications might be getting harder. If you're noticing missed meals, a messier home than usual, or forgotten prescriptions, it might be time to step in.

They've had a fall or near-miss. Even one fall can knock confidence and mobility. If your loved one is unsteady on their feet or hesitant to move around, support at home can help prevent future incidents and keep them safe.

They're becoming more isolated. If they're not getting out as much, missing social catch-ups, or seeming withdrawn, loneliness could be creeping in. A support worker can provide companionship and help them stay connected.

You're feeling overwhelmed. Caring for a loved one is rewarding but exhausting. If you're struggling to balance care with work, family, or your own wellbeing, it's okay to ask for help.

Their health is changing. New diagnoses, hospital stays, or increased medical appointments can all signal that extra support is needed to manage their care safely at home.

If any of these sound familiar, we're here to help. Getting support early can make a real difference.

Caregiver of the Year 2025 🤍

Tracy Matthews is the kind of caregiver who leaves a lasting imprint on every life she touches. Her professionalism, reliability and unwavering commitment set her apart but it’s the heart behind her care that truly makes her exceptional.

Tracy is someone we can always depend on. When shifts need covering, when the team is under pressure, and when clients need continuity of care, Tracy steps forward without hesitation. She regularly works long, demanding days often 10 hours at a time not because she has to, but because she genuinely cares and wants her clients supported properly. Even on the longest days, she brings the same warmth, energy and positivity into every home she enters.

Affectionately known as our little pocket rocket, Tracy brings infectious enthusiasm to her role. She builds meaningful, trusting relationships with her clients, listens without judgment, respects each person’s story, and meets people exactly where they are. Her ability to create safe, genuine connections allows clients to feel valued, understood and at ease.

What truly defines Tracy is her tireless drive to achieve the best possible outcomes for the people she supports. She advocates for her clients, works closely with the office team, and consistently goes above and beyond to uphold dignity, independence and wellbeing.

Tracy, your impact can’t be measured in hours worked or tasks completed. It’s felt in the peace of mind you give families, the confidence you restore in your clients, and the trust you build every single day. You are an incredible caregiver, a treasured colleague, and a shining example of everything Dovida stands for.

With immense pride and heartfelt gratitude, we celebrate and honour Tracy Matthews as our Caregiver of the Year for 2025. 💛

Our caregivers do so much more than just lend a hand. In the kitchen, they’re right there beside clients, helping with meal prep, cooking together, encouraging independence, and making everyday moments feel normal and enjoyable.

With the recent implementation of Support at Home, this means caregivers can now assist with things like:
• Meal preparation and cooking
• Support to stay safe and confident in the kitchen
• Encouraging independence and routine
• Sharing connection over everyday tasks

If you have any questions about Support at Home or how it might work for you or a loved one, please reach out. We’re always happy to help 💛

Uncle Rocky, Wolf and I at the Dimboola Library 🤍

I also wanted to share a photo of Uncle Rocky on his gopher. It really tells a story. Having one of these means seniors can still get out, stay connected, and keep their independence instead of feeling stuck at home or becoming isolated.

Moments like these remind me how important it is to support our clients to live life on their own terms.

In the past month, with the extreme heat and fires across the Wimmera, it’s been a strong reminder of how important it is to look after yourself and to check in on your older loved ones.

Hot weather, smoke and changing conditions can take a real toll, especially on those who are more vulnerable. A simple phone call, visit or extra check-in can make a big difference and help ensure everyone is safe, supported and coping during these conditions.
