SPF has been a hot topic since the report from consumer group Choice earlier this year finding a number of sunscreens were not providing the protection they claim on their packaging.

While the fallout from this report and the subsequent investigation by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is ongoing, one thing is for certain: rigorous testing of SPF levels is a good thing. Though these findings have raised questions on how that testing occurs, and more broadly on what SPF actually is.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It refers to how much protection a sunscreen provides from Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are most likely to cause sunburn and skin cancer.

The SPF rating indicates how much UVB is blocked from reaching the skin (understanding no sunscreen can ever block 100% of UV rays). SPF50 should allow only around 1/50th of UVB to reach the skin, equal to 2%, meaning it blocks 98% of UVB radiation. SPF30 should allow only 1/30th (3.3%), meaning it blocks around 96.7%, and so on.

It’s important to remember that SPF testing is carried out in laboratories under controlled settings, where sunscreen is liberally applied to a small area of skin which is then exposed to simulated UV light, with results over time compared to unprotected areas of skin.

In reality, a lot of people don’t apply enough sunscreen, miss patches over their body, or don’t wait long enough for it to soak in before sun exposure. Even the best sunscreen won’t be very effective unless applied properly and reapplied every two hours (or after swimming or sweating).

You should also ask your TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacist about the right sunscreen to suit you and your family, including SPF ratings, water resistance, sport suitability, finish types, and lotion vs spray vs roll-on.

And remember, while it’s important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 (ideally 50+), slopping that on is only one part of sun protection. Don’t forget to slip on protective clothing, slap on a wide-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses 😎

Taking the right precautions and not relying on sunscreen alone is the best way to enjoy our beautiful Aussie summers while staying sun smart!

Last year, Australia recorded over 57,000 cases of whooping cough (pertussis) – the most since reporting began in 1991, and significantly more than the previous record of 38,000.

That upward trend is continuing this year, with Australia battling an ongoing whooping cough epidemic.

Tomorrow is Whooping Cough Day, an initiative from Immunisation Foundation of Australia to highlight the importance of staying up to date with vaccinations to protect you and your loved ones 💚

We all know how it feels the day after a poor sleep. Low energy, lack of focus and irritability are classic signs of a restless night.

These short-term impacts are obvious as they affect your day-to-day functioning, but I find many people underestimate the serious long-term health impacts of sleep deprivation.

Consistently sleeping less than the recommend amount (7-9 hours per night for adults) increases your risk for a range of conditions from type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke to dementia and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Sleep deprivation also weakens your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to sickness.

Of course, it’s not easy for some people to achieve a consistent sleep schedule, particularly shift workers or those with young children. But if you’re able to do so, you need to be prioritising it. ‘Hustle culture’ encourages us to maximise our waking hours to get more done, but burning the candle at both ends only results in you burning out.

Here are a few ways you can improve your ‘sleep hygiene’ to give your body more time to rest and recover:

🕘 If you can, stick to a regular bedtime and wakeup schedule (including weekends)
🔇 Optimise your bedroom for sleep (quiet, dark and cool room with comfy bedding etc.)
🏃 Increase your physical activity during the day
☕ Avoid stimulants like caffeine or ni****ne close to bed
📴 Put your phone away an hour or so before bed
🌞 Keep daytime napping to a minimum

There are some conditions that impact your sleeping patterns which require more attention. Sleep apnoea is a serious disorder which causes your breathing to repeatedly stop and start during the night.

Many people don’t even realise they have sleep apnoea, but there are some signs to look out for, such as loud snoring, waking up gasping or choking, waking with a headache or sore throat and excessive daytime sleepiness.

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy can be lifechanging for people with sleep apnoea, but there is still stigma around wearing a CPAP mask to bed. Some worry about how it looks or that it will disrupt their routine, but I’ve seen it completely transform people’s quality of life by helping them finally sleep through the night.

Whether you need to consider CPAP therapy or just practice better sleep hygiene, getting more good-quality sleep benefits you and those around you. Remember, the most productive thing you can do to set yourself up for success is to sleep!

If you’re struggling with sleep or concerned about sleep apnoea, chat with your local TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacist about how to improve your sleep, including whether CPAP therapy is suitable for you.

📢 Real Talk: Don't skip this essential pre-travel preparation ⬇️

There’s a lot to think about when planning an overseas trip. Are the kids’ passports still valid? Do you need visas? Which jacket do you pack? Do you even need a jacket?

Amid all the logistics, the thought of getting sick or injured overseas can be an added stressor. As well as navigating language barriers and different standards of healthcare in other countries, there’s the prospect of a huge medical bill and loss of prepaid costs like flights and accommodation.

It’s impossible to prepare for all these potential risks when travelling, but there are steps you can take before you leave to make sure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons.

🌏 Research the destinations
Thoroughly researching your destination is a great first step. Do your own research but also try and get firsthand advice from people who have been there already so you’re aware of local diseases, healthcare standards and laws. A stress-free holiday begins with having safety top of mind when planning your itinerary.

📝 Purchase adequate travel insurance
Taking out adequate travel insurance to cover unforeseen medical expenses is essential. Make sure your policy covers all of your intended (and potential) travel destinations, as well as any additional activities you may have planned, like winter sports.

🫶 Have a pre-travel health consult
Finally, consulting with a healthcare professional for tailored advice specific to your health needs and travel plans is a great way to get extra peace of mind before you head off.

They can check that you’re up to date with routine vaccinations like measles-mumps-rubella, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio and influenza, as well as any required and recommended vaccinations specific to your destination.

You can also discuss how to best manage your medications while overseas, including storage, local regulations, required documentation and any travel-specific medications you might need, as well as what you should stock in your first-aid kit based on your destination and activities.

Your local TerryWhite Pharmacist can do all this in a 30-minute consultation (including administering certain vaccinations on the spot) so you can get on with planning the fun stuff.

Remember, unlike packing sandals instead of thongs, this is not preparation that can be left to the last minute. You should look to book a pre-travel consultation at least 6 weeks prior to departure to make sure you’re all set.

Speak with your Pharmacist or head to our website to book your pre-travel consultation to get your vaccinations, medications and first-aid sorted in just 30 minutes to set yourself up for a relaxing and incident-free getaway.

'Think Health, Think Pharmacist' - the theme of World Pharmacists Day 2025 is an important reminder of the evolving role pharmacists play in their communities.

Pharmacists today are more than just medicine experts – they can provide vaccinations, health checks, chronic condition support, contraception, UTI treatment, skin condition care and much more.

With more than 630 locations nationwide, 20 million Australians live within 8km of a TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacy, providing trusted care when they need it most.

This shot is just some of our 600+ Pharmacists and pharmacy professionals who attended our 2025 Masterclass event to grow their knowledge, learn from peers, and engage with the latest thinking in pharmacy care and innovation. It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to ensure every TWC Pharmacist has the confidence, capability and care to make a real impact.

Luckily, they're much better at their jobs than making a heart shape with their hands! 💚
