Would you notice this happening?

These visual fields belong to a patient with advanced glaucoma, the left eye has already lost most of its vision.

Glaucoma often progresses without symptoms, and many people don’t realise vision is being lost.

This patient’s mother went blind from glaucoma. When he was diagnosed, our priority was protecting the vision he still had. He recently underwent surgery with a Paul glaucoma implant (spot the tube in the photograph of the eye), and his eye pressure is now excellent without drops.

Ahead of World Glaucoma Week, we wanted to share the reminder that glaucoma often has no warning signs. Regular eye examinations are the only way to detect it early — especially if you have a family history.

Dr Cheung, Dr Yu, Dr Ross, Dr Hooper and our practice manager attended the annual RANZCO Congress in Melbourne over the weekend. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect and stay up to date with the latest in eye care.

We explored a wide range of topics — from cybersecurity and advances in medical AI, to practical tips for improving sustainability in operating theatres, and updates on ocular side effects of Dupilumab (commonly used by other specialists such as dermatologists).

A special congratulations to Dr Ross, who presented a poster featuring a case from our practice and also presented an Award at the opening ceremony.

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend of learning, collaboration and professional growth.

Dr Ross: I was in Laos in October with Sight For All at the National Ophthalmology Centre in Vientiane. Our focus was on training three paediatric ophthalmologists to improve eye care for children across the country. I taught strabismus surgery and helped out in clinics — patients came not only from Vientiane but also from rural provinces, some travelling up to two days to reach us.

It was an incredibly rewarding experience to help build local capacity and see the impact firsthand. 🇱🇦💙

✈️ Flying after surgery? It’s a question we’re often asked—especially by patients planning holidays or travelling from afar.

Yesterday, Dr Stringfellow operated on a lovely patient who, together with her husband, flew here in their own light plane from a remote property over 600km away in northwest NSW.

After a smooth and successful cataract surgery, she was thrilled to be able to fly home the very next day! 👏

Meet one of our associates Dr Helmut Yu! 👋Dr Helmut Yu is a consultant ophthalmologist with sub-specialty training in glaucoma, medical retina and cataract surgery. Following his ophthalmology training at The Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Dr Yu pursued sub-specialty fellowships at several prestigious institutions in the United Kingdom, focusing on glaucoma and cataract surgery at Cambridge University Hospital and Queen Victoria Hospital, and medical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was appointed as a glaucoma consultant at Cambridge University Hospital.
