There used to be a higher scrutiny about practitioner-only products and who prescribed and stocked them.

Nowadays herbs such as Andrographis and Echinacea are sold in formulations as a very effective treatment for the first signs of cold and flu (depending on the product strength). Most people are aware of the anti microbial actions of Echinacea in acute infection and it is well tolerated.

Andrographis is an amazing herb too. It will literally stop an infection at first outset It is a highly effective immune stimulant for both acute and chronic infection but unfortunately it is contra indicated in pregnancy for its abortifacient action.

It is a very effective herb for toxic liver damage too but again in high doses it can cause gastric discomfort, nausea and vomiting.

Herbs are medicine. Dosage and medical contra indications are an important part of prescribing to ensure efficacy and safety. Many herbs cannot be prescribed with other specific types of chemical medication because they may suppress, incite or impede the efficacy of that medication.
If you are interested in boosting your immune system naturally and effectively just make contact.. I can easily make and post a formulation for you.🙏

There are a number of plant extracts that have come into focus recently because of their specific and potent actions. Maritime pine bark ( Pinus pinaster) for example was featured in the Herbal Extract company’s guide on myocarditis and pericarditis recently because was are seeing a significant reporting of this in our practices in the population currently.

“It has significant cardio vascular benefits with significant free radical scavenging ability which can prevent oxidative damage”

Like grape seed extract, Maritime pine bark contains high levels of proanthocyanidins which protect the heart and cardio vascular systems. Pine bark improve blood flow, stimulates the immune system, reduces swelling and prevents infection. It may also lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
It is an excellent tonic for brain health, cognition and memory too.

Pycnogenol is the US registered trade name for the product derived from the pine bark tree used widely for heart conditions.

Maritime pine bark is available over the counter and on line but once again I express caution for self use as there are contra indications particularly in regard to pregnant woman, auto immune disorders and bleeding conditions.

Always check with a fully qualified naturopath or herbalist who can advise you of its suitability for you according to your own unique past health history, family history and current symptoms.

Green leaves berries and herbs are natural anti histamines for allergies.

Quercetin is the key flavonoid for natural allergy relief providing a natural source of anti histamine relief. Two other flavonoids are rutin and luteolin.

Histamine is an important neurotransmitter that is vital to our immune system. When you are injured histamine is released to prevent infection and repairs any damage.

Histamine responds to anything foreign taken into the body, food you are eating, or something you are exposed to in your environment.
Chemicals are a big trigger especially pesticides on produce, fragrances in lotions, and in household cleaners.
High stress also causes mast cells to release histamine into the bloodstream.

Headaches, brain fog, skin issues like hives and rashes, rapid heart beat, anxiety and runny noses and breathing difficulties are some reactive symptoms.

Interestingly use of anti histamines has recently been shown to be effective after the first week of the virus currently circulating, from days 7-10 if breathing becomes difficult.

There are ways to reduce histamine naturally. There are plenty of downloadable anti histamine food tables but I would suggest
leaving out leftover meat ,vinegar,
fermented foods and aged meats if you are reactive to something.

Drink plenty of filtered water too as histamine is water soluble.

Natural remedies.
* Moringa leaf , Green tea, stinging nettle tea, ( urtica dioica)ginger, peppermint
* Ginger & licorice are excellent natural antihistamines
* Quercetin , vitamin C

In light of the cold and flu symptoms sweeping widely through our communities at the moment, here is a great home remedy-
Dorothy Hall’s “ Kick a germ juice” has been passed down through generations of naturopaths to attack the symptoms of colds and flu.
Take…
1. a clove of garlic
2. 1tsp of grated ginger
3. 1tsp of lemon rind
Pour over small amount of boiling water and let it stand for 5 mins.
Add…
1. the juice of 1 lemon
2. a pinch of cayenne pepper
3. honey to taste
Drink the liquid then eat the solids.
Jump into bed and rest.

With plenty of rest you will feel better in no time. This is such an effective remedy to break a fever, reduce inflammation and kill infection. It is high in vitamin C too.
Meanwhile high doses of vitamin C, D and zinc will boost your immunity.

A herbalist/naturopath can also mix you an to kill the bacterial/ viral load, boost your immune system, alleviate your symptoms and restore your energy.
Stay well. 🙏

I was using green tea extract recently in some of my products and it reminded me of the Camellia sinensis tea plantation I visited in Sri lanka a few years ago.
The tea from the Camellia sinensis plant can be used in a variety of ways but drinking it as a tea is easy and very refreshing. The extract delivers the actions of the plant leaves in a more concentrated form. It contains rich amounts of anti oxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and flavonoids. It is particularly high in an antioxidant catechin EGCG ( epigallocatechin gallate) which has been shown in extensive research to protect against oxidative stress which causes cellular damage which is associated with several chronic disease states and ageing.
Studies have shown green tea extract to have a multitude of health benefits
in the gut biome, and for brain and heart health, weight loss and liver function. It may also benefit exercise performance/recovery and also help lower blood sugar levels.
In recent years it has been shown to have amazing healing benefits for the skin too. It calms irritation, evens out discolouration, diminishes the appearance of cellulite, soothes redness and swelling, repairs damage, exfoliates, decreases the appearance of blackheads eliminates dead skin and bacteria.
Research in recent years has shown actions of green tea extract has the ability to rectify damage from the sun and the process of ageing. 👍

Yeah ! The Sappho brand is in progress👍 The gel serums and oil serums are in production!
Often when making new formulations I love to research old dispensary and aromatherapy books and balance these ideas with new biochemical research.
With skincare it is as important to know how the nutrients and plant extracts that repair and heal work, as it is to understand the ambience between the carrier oils and essential oils. These bring a whole new synergy of their own to a formulation. As well as having an aroma they have therapeutic actions. I am like a conductor trying to find harmony between top, middle and base notes.

Many years ago in my final year of clinic I was told “Let the iris dictate” Iridology is my favourite diagnostic tool to determine causal health issues. By looking at the colours, patterns and other tissue characteristics the iris can give so much information about ones constitutional strengths and weaknesses, toxicity, accumulations of waste & catarrh , nutritional deficiencies and so much more.

I know I have posted recently about plastic waste but it breaks my heart to see what is happening to our waterways and ultimately our land snd sea animals. Did you know micro plastic beads are actually manufactured for use in skin care products like body washes, exfoliants, toothpastes and household cleaners! They are so minute they look like food to marine life and harbour toxic chemicals which are carriers for pollutants into the human digestive system.
Micro beads have been found in deep ocean water, remote lakes, ground water and even drinking water.
Our state government today has pledged to ban single use plastics which these are in the future but what can we do now?

1. Stop using products that contain polyethylene, propolyethylene, polypropolylene polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate, polylactic acid,
2. Do not wash these products down the drain!! You can put the product through a coffee filter first.
3. Use natural alternatives: pumice, seeds, husks, shell, grains, coffee.
4. Make your own exfoliants from simple products like salt, sugars, herbal/flower plant powders.
5. Recipes can be made mixing the exfoliant with some base oil like coconut oil to moisten and a drop or two of essential oil like mandarin to add aroma!
6. Try natural brushes: h**p, sisal, pumice sponge for example.

What makes a plant medicinal?
Every plant has its own unique blend of active biological ingredients. These provide self protection for the plant but also medicinal use for humans. To put it simply there are numerous types of actives in plants from alkaloids, bitters, glycosides, flavonoids, polysaccharides, proanthrocyanins, terpines and sterols, phenols & tannins, volitile oils and resins, minerals and vitamins. All these have many other sub groups of chemicals each with a different action.
We use the bitters for stimulating the digestive system, the phenols can be anti inflammatory, anti septic and anti viral. Steroidal saponins are very similar to the structure of many human hormones -oestrogen, progesterone testosterone cortisol etc.Polysaccharides are able to soak up large quantities of water and form jelly like masses that can be used to treat dry irritated tissues and mucous membranes and Glycosides can act as muscle relaxants and are good in cough remedies. So many actions. So many uses!

Herbal medicine is not a belief system. It is the biology which modern medicine has chemically and synthetically replicated. In its raw form, a plant needs to be holistically manufactured, it’s properties understood, a human ailment diagnosed and then the remedy dispensed by a qualified herbal practitioner.

As we head into winter the use of the herb Echinacea can greatly reduce the
possibility of catching unpleasant upper bacterial or viral respiratory infections
Those common cold symptoms of sore throat, blocked nose m, coughing and sneezing can be greatly soothes by the herb as well as those headaches, fevers and body aches and cold sweats from a virus. It is a good standby coming into the colder months.
Corona virus and Rhino Virus are the main viral cause of colds. The flu develops from influenza virus A B or C.
I always believe the liquid extract form is best but these days in tablet form combinations as well. It is great as a herbal tea too. I use Echinacgea in my organic immune boosting tea blend with other herbs like Astragalys and Licquorice and it’s in my Cokd and flu blend too with Peppermint And Thyme to name a few.
