Have you noticed how different foods actually feel in your body?

Your body knows the difference between real food and processed food.

And it’s not just about calories.

Whole foods come with structure — fibre, nutrients, minerals — all working together.

Your body recognises that. It knows what to do with it.

Whereas many processed foods have been
broken down, refined, and rebuilt…with added flavours, stabilisers, and isolated compounds.

So your body has to respond differently.

And that’s often why you might notice:

* energy dips
* bloating
* feeling unsatisfied
* or craving more soon after eating

It’s rarely about one ingredient on its own…

it’s the overall pattern of what you’re eating.

This isn’t about being perfect.

But the closer your food is to its natural state,
the easier it generally is for your body to recognise and use.

At the rising of the sun, we remember.

With gratitude for the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of those who came before us — and for the freedoms we carry forward each day.

Lest we forget 🌅

Reading ingredient lists is one of the simplest — and most powerful — things you can do for your health.

Because once you start looking… you realise how much of what we’re eating isn’t really food.

I’ve been reading labels for over 20 years, and the shift has been huge.

More additives.
More flavours.
More colours.
More ultra-processed ingredients.

And while it’s easy to focus on one thing at a time…

it’s rarely about a single ingredient.

It’s the accumulation of these across heavily processed foods that I believe plays a role in inflammation, chronic health issues, and even how we feel day to day.

The good news?

You don’t have to change everything overnight.

Small shifts here are powerful.

I’m so excited by the area of nutritional psychiatry gaining more attention!

・・・
Your gut and brain are in constant communication through the gut-brain axis — and the research on what that means for your mental health is some of the most compelling science in medicine right now.

Researchers have found clear links between gut microbiome composition and rates of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

A landmark clinical trial found that participants who shifted to a whole-food diet saw significantly greater reductions in depression symptoms than those who received social support alone. Food moved the needle more than therapy.

Diets high in ultra-processed foods, refined sugar, and artificial additives drive neuroinflammation and impair neurotransmitter function. Diets rich in vegetables, omega-3s, fermented foods, and quality protein are linked to better mood and lower rates of depression.

This is nutritional psychiatry — and it’s reshaping how forward-thinking clinicians approach mental health.

You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul. I’ve seen patients report better mood, more stable energy, and sharper focus very quickly after cleaning up their diet. Small changes compound. Your next meal is where it starts.

Let’s talk about “rosemary extract.”

It sounds simple.
Natural.
Like something you’d use in your own cooking.

But in packaged foods, it’s usually being used as an antioxidant additive — helping extend shelf life and prevent fats from going rancid.

It does come from rosemary…
but what ends up in food is a concentrated extract of specific compounds, like carnosic acid.

To get there, the plant is:
• processed
• extracted (often using solvents)
• concentrated
• and deodorised

So it doesn’t taste or smell like rosemary at all.

It’s also classified as E392, and functions similarly to other antioxidant preservatives used in food manufacturing.

This doesn’t automatically make it harmful.

But it does highlight something important:

👉 not everything that sounds natural is close to its original form

And understanding that distinction is where real food awareness begins

Had you noticed how often this shows up on labels lately?

Let’s talk about the word “natural.”

It sounds comforting. Clean. Straight from the earth.

But when you see “natural flavours” on an ingredient list — it’s often anything but.

These flavours are typically created in labs.
They may start from something found in nature…
but are then extracted, altered, and combined with other compounds along the way.

And here’s the part most people don’t realise:

👉 manufacturers don’t have to disclose exactly what’s in them.

So while it says “natural”… it can be very far from whole food.

And that matters — because it creates a health halo around ultra-processed ingredients.

If it didn’t grow in the earth, roam a pasture, or come out of a pot in your kitchen… it’s probably not as natural as it sounds.

Some of these protein powders and bars are honestly taking the p**s.

They’re marketed as “healthy”… but when you turn them over, the ingredient list often tells a very different story.

Things like:
• natural flavours
• sweeteners
• vegetable oils
• maltodextrin
• and long lists of added ingredients

Even the ones marketed as a “complete healthy meal” are still highly processed products.

And the protein bars?

Lemon cheesecake flavour… really?

This doesn’t mean all protein powders are bad.
But it does mean they’re definitely not all equal.

If you’re going to use them, it’s worth:
👉 checking the ingredient list
👉 understanding the protein source
👉 and keeping things as simple as possible

Because “high protein” doesn’t automatically mean supportive for your body.

Skills worth having and using 🥦🥕🥒

Fabian Capomolla
・・・
My Nonno didn’t grow food because it was trendy. He grew food because that’s what you did. Because you couldn’t always rely on someone else to feed your family. Because hard times come — and when they do, the people with a patch out the back eat better than anyone.

That generation understood something we’re only just remembering. That the ground beneath your feet is an asset. That seeds are an investment. That knowing how to grow your own food is one of the most practical, grounding, quietly powerful things a person can do.

For many, it’s tough times again. Everything costs more. The weekly shop is becoming a genuine stress for a lot of families. And I keep thinking about my nonno — not nostalgically, but practically. He had the answer. A prisoner of war, he never made a fuss.

This account exists because of him. And everything over at Veggie Patch School exists because I believe the skills he had are the skills we all need right now.

Go learn them. They’re free.

Very interesting food for thought from Slow Food International

In many places around the world choice doesn’t really exist when it comes to healthy food.

Changing how food systems operate as part of an ecosystem is crucial to creating a sustainable future for our planet and ourselves.
