When you hear the word “supports,” it can sometimes be confusing because not all supports are funded by the NDIS. Understanding the difference can help you make the most of what’s available.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Informal Supports – these are unpaid supports, usually from family, friends, or your community. They’re the everyday people who help out.
Mainstream Supports – these come from systems outside the NDIS, like health care, education, housing, or community services. Think GPs, schools, or public transport.
NDIS Supports – these are funded through your NDIS plan, tailored around your goals and disability-related needs. They might include therapy, assistive technology, or support workers.
The NDIS is designed to complement informal and mainstream supports not replace them. Knowing how they all fit together ensures you’re accessing the right help in the right places.
