On 21 February 2026, we acknowledge International Mother Language Day and celebrate the strength and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages across Australia. Before colonisation, more than 250 distinct languages were spoken across this continent — today, communities are leading powerful efforts to protect, revitalise and pass them on to future generations.

Language carries culture, law, Songlines, humour and deep connections to Country — it is living knowledge. From Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Queensland to the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, Aboriginal-guided experiences share language in ways that are grounded, contextual and deeply connected to place.

Through organisations like Discover Aboriginal Experiences, visitors are immersed in living languages spoken on Country, woven into storytelling, Welcome to Country, song and ceremony.

Initiatives such as Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School remind us that language revival is about more than words — it’s about restoring knowledge systems, identity and community wellbeing.

Today, we honour the voices that have carried these languages for tens of thousands of years — and the generations ensuring they remain strong, lived and thriving.

On Friday 13 February 2026, our Kambu Health Members Elders Group attended the 18th Anniversary of the National Apology Day to the Stolen Generations Link-Up QLD event at QPAC South Brisbane.

The Jarjums from the Murri School (Acacia Ridge) did deadly traditional dances while Ken Jacobs (proud Wakka Wakka man) was singing in lingo and playing the didgeridoo.

The program included several guest speakers: The Hon Fiona Simpson MP, Olga Havnen AM, and Commissioner Natalie Lewis.

A special performance by Jaymon Bob, a proud Ghungalu man from Rockhampton, who sang a few songs.

We also watched the video of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivering the National Apology on 13 February 2008, formally acknowledging all the hurt, pain, and suffering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children being forcibly removed from their families.

It was a time to reflect on the injustices, harm, and trauma caused by past government policies and practices to our families, and how our people are resilient – Survivors – rising above it all, to keep our culture, our families, and our connections alive. We are recognised as the oldest living culture in the world, and yet our people are still healing and reconnecting from the atrocities that happened in the past. The event was very heavy and heart-felt by all, and a few of our Elders had tears in their eyes.

After the formalities, our Elders had some delicious scones and treats made with bush ingredients and met up with mob. Aunty Kathy was surprised to see her nephew, and Aunty Kaylene also met up with family.

On our way back to Ipswich, our Elders decided to stop for some lunch at McDonalds in Goodna. This was a good opportunity to talk amongst themselves about this morning’s event.

Thank you Link-Up Qld for a very moving and heart-felt event. Thank you for the amazing work you do for our people - ‘Still Bringing Them Home’ to Family, Community and Country.

🎨Laidley Arts & Crafts Day 🎨

The day was filled with creativity: painting, diamond art, jewellery making, and beading.

🖼️Aunty Rhonda and Aunty Ruth completed some beautiful canvas paintings
🐱Aunty Janelle chose to do some diamond art of a colourful cat
📿Aunty Julie made a lovely pair of earrings, whilst Aunty Lillian chose to make a pearl necklace and bracelet to match

The Elders were happy that some Kambu Health employees popped in to say ‘hello’, have a bit of a yarn, and have their photos taken with the Elders.

Even though we had a small group today, the noise inside the room was loud from the yarning, laughing and deadly Country Music playing to which took Elders back in time, thinking about how certain songs brought back memories.

A big thank you goes out to Nicholas and Anthony (Kambu Health employees) for catering to the needs of our Elders today with drinks, a fruit platter and lunch: chicken, salad, and bread rolls. ❤️👏🏽

Our deadly Elders were out at Goodna for the Generational Well event last week, proudly hosted by the Kambu Health Social Wellbeing Team 🌿☀️

It was a warm one, but our Elders kept cool in the shade of the rotunda, staying hydrated with plenty of H2O 💧 and enjoying some good yarns. There were smiles all around as they caught up with Ronella (Wellbeing Counsellor), Lenny (Social Worker) and Ethan (Intake & Admin Officer) 🤝✨

The Kambu Health Van was set up and ready to go, with Dr Yusuf and Nurse Laura on site for consultations — and a few of our Elders took the opportunity to have their checks done 🚐🩺👏

A special moment for the day was Aunty Rhonda receiving a visit from her younger sister, who dropped by to give Aunty Rhonda her ukulele. We were all excited to have Aunty Rhonda play her ukulele and sing for us🎶

We had a delicious lunch of hamburger rissoles, sausages, fresh salad and rolls, with a special addition of bunya nuts, thanks to Aunty Kaylene and Uncle Anthony 🌭🥗🌰😋

Thanks to the Social Health Team for a wonderful day and a delicious lunch. 😋
