Have you had a baby in the last 12 months?

Here's an opportunity to participate in research re: developing a validated tool to measure ethical care.

Have you had a baby in the last 12 months? If you're interested in completed this survey you'll find the link in comments.

What is this project about?
Ideally, every childbearing woman should receive care that is ethical during their perinatal experience (International Confederation of Midwives, 2017; World Health Organisation, 2015). The perinatal period is a time of significant physiological and psychosocial change and ethical care plays a critical role in shaping how these changes are experienced. The first empirical study of care ethics in midwifery by Australian researchers Buchanan and team (2023) defined ethical care as to practice in a woman-centred way that situates the woman as the ‘owner’ of her experience, and ethical care contributes to a sense of feeling empowered. The authors identified an absence of a valid and reliable instrument to measure ethical care in the perinatal period.

Recent meta-analysis (most reliable form of study) de-bunks again the 'admission strip: 'Routine admission CTG in low-risk term pregnancies demonstrated no improvement in maternal or neonatal outcomes. Previous concerns regarding increased caesarean delivery rates appear overstated. These findings support current recommendations favouring IA over routine admission CTG in low-risk pregnancies." A free birth is when a woman chooses to have a baby, usually at home, without a registered midwife or doctor in attendance. It’s much riskier than a planned home birth.

Something special for the parents beyond the baby stage…

You might know Jannie as one of our midwives here at New Life Midwifery – but did you know she also supports families well beyond the newborn days?

In less than two weeks, Jannie is hosting a beautiful evening workshop designed especially for parents of young children who are feeling a little frayed at the edges – and wondering how to support their child’s nervous system… without losing their own.

She’ll be joined by Kristan from Supporting Balance, who many of you will remember from her nourishing and eye-opening presentations at our antenatal and postnatal groups.

Together, they’re bringing you Nourish & Nurture – Rewiring Safety from the Inside Out.

It’s a down-to-earth, heart-led session combining two powerful tools: the SleepTalk® process and the Root Cause Protocol – to help you bring more calm, confidence, and connection into your home.
This isn’t just for the kids. It’s for you, too.

The Ipswich session is on Thursday 14th August. Babies in arms welcome.

Join us for a nourishing and deeply restorative weekend retreat with Kristan Kershaw and Cindy Currie in Brisbane. Reconnect with your body, rest deeply, and explore mineral-based wellness in a supportive and grounded environment.

World Breastfeeding Week Begins Today!

Every year, the 1st of August marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week — a global celebration and call to action that reminds us of the beauty, importance, and right of every baby and mother to access the support they need to breastfeed successfully.

Here in Australia, while more than 96% of mothers initiate breastfeeding, by the time babies are 5 months old, less than 15% are exclusively breastfed. This isn’t a failure of mothers — this is a systems issue. And it’s something we can change.

What does the research say?
Research shows that the most important predictor for breastfeeding duration and satisfaction is support — both professional and social. Support that is informed, non-judgmental, consistent, and accessible.
Breastfeeding isn't just about milk — it's about hormones, bonding, microbiome development, long-term health outcomes, and building the foundations of trust and connection for both mother and baby.

When we support breastfeeding, we’re not just feeding babies. We’re nurturing mothers, families, and communities.

At New Life Midwifery, we are deeply committed to walking beside our families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. But we don’t always know what happens after discharge. We want to better understand the long-term breastfeeding outcomes for our clients, and also be able to compare this data with state and national data.

If you are one of our past clients, we would love to hear from you! Please comment “client” below, or get in touch with us to complete a short survey about your breastfeeding journey after discharge.

With love and lactation,
Jannie x
