Not all approaches fit every person.

If things havenโ€™t shifted despite effort, it may be worth exploring a different way of working.

Perhaps one that considers pace, context, and how change is supported over time. ๐ŸŒฟ

This simple yet powerful statement encapsulates the essence of mindfulness and neuroplasticity. It reminds us that the focus of our attention plays a crucial role in shaping our brain's structure and function. ๐Ÿง

Our brains are incredibly adaptable. Every time we direct our attention towards something, whether it's a thought, emotion, or activity, we're strengthening neural pathways associated with that focus. This process, known as neuroplasticity, means that our habits and thought patterns can physically change our brains over time. ๐ŸŒฟ

Mindfulness practices encourage us to become more aware of where we're directing our attention. ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

By choosing to focus on positive thoughts, constructive emotions, and healthy behaviours, we can foster neural connections that support wellbeing, resilience, and emotional balance. ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Can psychologists diagnose? Yes โ€” and it matters.

Psychologists are trained to assess and diagnose mental health and developmental conditions using the criteria outlined in the DSM-5-TR.

This includes a wide range of presentations across the lifespan โ€” from anxiety and mood concerns, to neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and intellectual disability.

๐ŸŒฟ Our approach - We complete comprehensive assessments that look at the full picture โ€” not just one area in isolation. This helps ensure diagnoses are accurate, meaningful, and useful for support planning.

๐Ÿ‘“ A common oversight weโ€™re seeing - Some children continue to hold a diagnosis of Global Developmental Delay beyond the age of 5 without an updated cognitive assessment.

The DSM-5-TR specifies that:
- Global Developmental Delay is used only when a child is under 5 years old, and
- A more specific diagnosis (such as Intellectual Disability) should be considered once appropriate assessment is possible.

๏ธ๐Ÿ“ Without updated assessment, this can impact:
- access to appropriate supports
- clarity around a childโ€™s needs
- future planning and intervention

Why this matters?
Accurate, up-to-date diagnosis supports better outcomes. It guides supports, informs funding (including NDIS), and helps families and professionals move forward with confidence. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

If youโ€™re unsure whether an assessment is current or appropriate, it may be worth reviewing with our experienced team.

We also have the capacity to complete non-verbal cognitive assessments.

The Diagnostic Capacity of Registered Psychologists in Australia remains one of our most accessed resources for a reason.

It covers:
โœ…Key facts
โœ…The role of the Psychology Board of Australia
โœ…Core Diagnostic Competencies Required for General Registration
โœ…Legal and Professional Recognition
โœ…Misconceptions
โœ…Professional Responsibility

AAPi strongly advocates for recognition of the full scope of practice of all registered psychologists,
regardless of endorsement status.

Restricting diagnostic rights based on endorsement is inconsistent with the regulatory framework,
training pathways, and legal precedent in Australia.

We would like to congratulate Sarah on completing training in EMDR therapy. ๐ŸŽ‰

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach that supports the brain to process and make sense of difficult or overwhelming experiences, so they feel less intense over time.

EMDR may support people who are experiencing anxiety or sudden feelings of panic, memories that feel hard to shake or keep coming back, difficult life experiences that still feel emotionally heavy, and grief and the pain of loss. ๐Ÿ’™

Sarah continues to build on her skills through ongoing learning and integrates EMDR alongside other therapeutic approaches to support clients in a way that is responsive to each personโ€™s needs and pace. โœจ๏ธ

Neurodiversity Celebration Week invites reflection on the many different ways people think, feel, and experience the world. ๐ŸŒˆ

As Harmony Week is also recognised, this extends to how difference is understood, respected, and supported across all aspects of identity, including neurodiversity. ๐Ÿค—

At Calm Space Psychology Services, neurodivergence is understood as difference, not deficit. When support aligns with how a person functions best, there is greater capacity for connection, engagement, and ease across home, school, and work environments.

5 ways to create more neurodiversity-affirming spaces:

๐Ÿ‘‚ Listen and ask
Take time to understand individual preferences and needs, rather than assuming.

๐Ÿ›‹ Adjust the environment
Small changes to noise, lighting, structure, or expectations can make a meaningful difference.

๐Ÿ’ซ Support predictability
Clear communication, routines, and preparation for change can reduce overwhelm.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป Focus on strengths
Recognise interests, abilities, and ways of thinking that bring value and capability.

๐Ÿ‘“ Respect different communication styles
Communication can look different for everyone, and all forms are valid.

Creating environments that are flexible, respectful, and responsive supports more meaningful engagement and connection.

This week highlights the value of recognising difference, approaching others with curiosity, and creating spaces where people can engage in ways that feel right for them. ๐Ÿ’™

Calm Space Turns 5 ๐ŸŽ‰

Five years ago, Calm Space Psychology Services opened with a simple hope: to create a place where people could slow down, be heard, and work through lifeโ€™s challenges with thoughtful support.

Since then, thousands of conversations, moments of courage, and quiet breakthroughs have taken place within these walls. Each story shared and each step forward has shaped what Calm Space is today. โœจ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’™ To our clients โ€” thank you for trusting us with deeply personal parts of your lives.

๐Ÿ’™ To our team โ€” thank you for the care, skill, and integrity you bring to your work every day.

๐Ÿ’™ And to our community โ€” thank you for continuing to support a practice built on connection, respect, and growth.

Five years in, we remain committed to doing this work with care and intention.

Thank you for being part of the Calm Space journey. ๐ŸŒฟ

Harmony Week and our 5th birthday came together in a meaningful way at Calm Space this week. ๐ŸŽ‰

Today, the Calm Space team shared food, stories, and pieces of their backgrounds with one another. Millie introduced her Peruvian ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช culture, Bruna brought Brazilian ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท flavours, Vinita shared her details of her upbringing from Botswana ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ผ, and Trudi brought pavlova (the team's favourite) while sharing reflections from her New Zealand background. Karyn joined online and shared a glimpse into the different names used in New Zealand compared to Australia. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

The team also acknowledged the diversity within our space and the many languages we all speak in addition to English - Jennyโ€™s Chinese heritage and her ability to speak Mandarin and Cantonese, Chiaraโ€™s Italian language, and Millieโ€™s Spanish. ๐ŸŒŽ

These moments reflect the respect we hold for the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences our clients bring into the space each day.

This is what continues to shape Calm Space after five years - respect for each personโ€™s story, and the relationships built along the way. ๐Ÿ’™

We are grateful to continue the celebrations for the rest of the week with the team and our clients! ๐Ÿค—
