Neurodiversity Celebration Week invites reflection on the many different ways people think, feel, and experience the world. ๐
As Harmony Week is also recognised, this extends to how difference is understood, respected, and supported across all aspects of identity, including neurodiversity. ๐ค
At Calm Space Psychology Services, neurodivergence is understood as difference, not deficit. When support aligns with how a person functions best, there is greater capacity for connection, engagement, and ease across home, school, and work environments.
5 ways to create more neurodiversity-affirming spaces:
๐ Listen and ask
Take time to understand individual preferences and needs, rather than assuming.
๐ Adjust the environment
Small changes to noise, lighting, structure, or expectations can make a meaningful difference.
๐ซ Support predictability
Clear communication, routines, and preparation for change can reduce overwhelm.
๐ช๐ป Focus on strengths
Recognise interests, abilities, and ways of thinking that bring value and capability.
๐ Respect different communication styles
Communication can look different for everyone, and all forms are valid.
Creating environments that are flexible, respectful, and responsive supports more meaningful engagement and connection.
This week highlights the value of recognising difference, approaching others with curiosity, and creating spaces where people can engage in ways that feel right for them. ๐
