Starting therapy can feel confusing, especially with so many mixed messages about how it works. Here are two common myths we often hear:

🧠 Myth: You need a referral to see a psychologist.
✅ Fact: You don’t. You can self-refer at any time — no GP referral required.

👪 Myth: Child therapy only involves the child.
🌼 Fact: Even when the child is the client, involving parents and carers strengthens progress and supports change beyond the therapy room.

If you’ve been thinking about therapy — for yourself or your child — you don’t need to wait for the “right time” or a referral.

The Calm Space team is here to help you begin in a way that feels supportive, calm, and clear.

The goal of co-regulation isn’t to “make calm happen” or to dismiss the full spectrum of emotions. Big feelings are not problems to fix — they are signals, and children need to know their sadness, anger, fear, and frustration are just as valid as their joy and excitement.

This is a super misunderstood nuance to emotional regulation and emotional intelligence.

What we know from the neuroscience is that children borrow our nervous system before they can regulate on their own using theirs. When we stay grounded, it doesn’t mean we’re demanding calm from them — it means we’re offering our calm as an anchor. This creates the safety their brains need to process their emotions fully. Over time, those repeated experiences wire their brains toward the capacity for self-regulation.

So when we say “kids learn calm by borrowing ours,” it’s less about calm being the goal and more about our calm presence creating space for their whole emotional experience to unfold safely. Calm becomes a byproduct of safety, trust, and connection.

Give it space and time 💙

How we feel and the emotions we experience are a central part of our mental health. Conversely how we respond to emotions is critical for our health, mental and physical. While they can perplexing, stubborn, frustrating, annoying, frightening and downright depressing at times, emotions are a fundamental and necessary part of brain functioning. In fact, they are central to being human.

Unfortunately societal beliefs often tells us we shouldn’t have emotions or some emotions are bad. Telling your brain it shouldn’t have emotions is like telling your heart not to beat or your lungs not to breathe, and it doesn’t make your brain very happy.

Emotions don’t always feel nice and can make us want to run away from them. And like any avoidance, short term this seems to work, we feel relieved. But inside your brain is feeling pretty annoyed at trying to hold it all in.

How you respond to your emotions is important. Research shows suppressing, berating and shaming emotions doesn’t help us deal with them at all and just creates more stress and make emotions feel even more difficult.

Naming, validating, expressing and recognising emotions seems to help us process them and help us become friends with them, rather than them having power over us. It seems to soothe those emotions and instead of adding a layer of more stress and difficult feelings, helps us deal with the ones we have.

At Calm Space Psychology Services, your well-being is our top priority, and the first appointment, known as the intake, plays a pivotal role in tailoring our support to your unique needs. Here's what to expect and why it matters:

🚪 Step 1: Warm Welcome & Introductions - Our warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits, making you feel comfortable from the moment you step in.

Your therapist will introduce themselves and emphasise the importance of confidentiality and privacy, creating a safe space for sharing.

📋 Step 2: Thorough Assessment/Intake - Through thoughtful questions, we delve into your background, history, and concerns. This is crucial for crafting a personalised treatment plan.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Child/Adolescent Clients - For our younger clients, involving parents/guardians is essential. Sometimes, the intake process may include only the parent/guardian to gather valuable insights about the child's development and behaviours.

🤝 Step 3: Collaborative Planning - Together, we discuss treatment options, goals, and what the journey ahead looks like. This collaborative approach ensures that your needs are at the forefront.

💬 Step 4: Open Dialogue - Questions, concerns, and preferences are openly discussed. This is your opportunity to voice what matters most to you.

🌟 Step 5: Empowerment - Leaving your first appointment, you're equipped with a tailored plan, specifically designed to address your unique circumstances.

Our thorough intake process is evidence-based and the foundation of effective therapy. It enables us to provide you with the personalised care you deserve, ensuring that your mental health journey is as individual as you are. 🌈

If you're ready to take this vital step towards well-being, don't hesitate to reach out and schedule your first appointment. Your mental health matters, and we're here to support you every step of the way. 💙

Our Calm Space Team’s 5 Favourite Ways to De-Stress 😌

At the end of a busy day, we also turn to simple rituals that bring us calm. Here are the top five self-soothing strategies our team loves most:

💃 Sing or dance to favourite tunes – Music and movement lift mood and help release built-up stress.

🛁 Take a warm bath or shower – Warm water relaxes tired muscles and signals to the body it’s time to unwind.

🍃 Pause and listen to nature sounds – Whether it’s birds outside your window or a nature playlist, these sounds gently ground and calm the mind.

✍️ Journaling – Putting thoughts on paper clears mental clutter and gives emotions a safe outlet.

🍵 Enjoy a warm cup of herbal tea – Slowing down with a soothing drink can help you feel nurtured and present.

These small, everyday practices remind us that calm isn’t found in big moments, it’s created through little rituals of care. 💙

✨ If you’d like support finding your own Calm Space, our team is here to help - reach out to book a session today.
