Emotional regulation is a lifelong skill.

We continue learning how our nervous system responds to stress, connection, rest, and change.

"This visual shows how emotional regulation develops from infancy through adolescence โ€” not in a straight line, but gradually, with support, setbacks, and rebuilding along the way.

Babies rely entirely on adults to regulate.

Young children borrow calm and learn language for feelings.

Older children begin to practise skills โ€” and still wobble.

Teens may look independent, but their regulation is still developing well into adulthood."

Linking into our new series, Understanding the Developing Brain.

Emotional regulation isnโ€™t something children suddenly learn.
Itโ€™s something their brain builds over time.

This visual shows how emotional regulation develops from infancy through adolescence โ€” not in a straight line, but gradually, with support, setbacks, and rebuilding along the way.

Big emotions at any age arenโ€™t a failure.
Theyโ€™re a sign that the nervous system needs support, safety, and connection.

Save this as a reminder when things feel hard.
Share it with someone supporting children or young people.

January often brings a quiet awareness rather than a dramatic reset. ๐ŸŒฟ

Many people notice the same patterns returning โ€” stress that never quite eased, emotions pushed aside, or needs that stayed at the bottom of the list. Some of our clients tell us, โ€œI donโ€™t want this year to feel the same as the last.โ€

Therapy isnโ€™t about becoming someone new or fixing whatโ€™s broken. Itโ€™s about understanding whatโ€™s been weighing you down, building capacity, and making intentional choices about how you want to move through this year.

If your mental health has been something you planned to get to โ€œeventuallyโ€, this can be a steady point to begin โ€” without pressure, urgency, or expectations.

๐Ÿ’™ We support children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, both in-person and via telehealth.

Starting therapy often means youโ€™re choosing not to keep carrying things alone. โœจ๏ธ

Every action we take,
every word we speak,
and every emotion we express
leaves a lasting impression on our children.

They are keen observers, absorbing and learning how we:

- Treat others with respect and care
- Respond and react when we feel intense emotions
- Speak of others in their absence
- Practice non-violence with gentle hands
- Respond to them with open hearts and listening ears
- Handle disappointment and react to failure

These everyday moments shape their understanding of the world and their place within it. ๐Ÿ’™

"The values we so happen to wish to instil in them are reflected in our own behaviour."

Being mindful of the powerful influence we have on our children, we strive to model the values of kindness, empathy, and resilience. โœจ๏ธ

"Our actions and attitudes, both good and bad, become lasting lessons in living." ๐Ÿ’–

Discover how Calm Space Psychology Services can help you and your family find the inner calm and lead a more balanced, fulfilling life.

We look forward to walking this journey together. ๐Ÿ’™

Our thoughts are with those affected by the tragic events at Bondi Beach.

Incidents like this can unsettle a sense of safety, even for people who were not directly involved. In the days that follow, some may notice increased anxiety, emotional distress, changes in sleep, or a heightened response to everyday situations. These reactions are common after exposure to sudden and violent events, including through news or social media.

It may help to take breaks from ongoing coverage, stay connected with supportive people, and seek professional support if these responses feel intense or persist over time.

If you would like to talk with a psychologist, our team is available. ๐Ÿ’™

The holidays can be a beautiful mix of joy, noise, pressure, and disrupted routines โ€” and your mind often feels it before you do. If this time of year tends to stretch you thin, a little preparation now can create a much gentler season ahead. ๐ŸŒฟ

Here are four small shifts that go a long way:

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Plan real โ€œrechargeโ€ time
Quiet moments donโ€™t magically appear in December โ€” you have to claim them. Block out pockets of down-time the same way youโ€™d book appointments. Your nervous system will thank you.

๐Ÿ“… Keep a loose routine
Late nights and busy days can throw you off balance. A simple anchor โ€” wake-up time, meals, or a short walk โ€” helps your mind stay steady even when everything else feels chaotic.

๐ŸŽฏ Practise single-tasking
Your brain handles one thing at a time, no matter how convincing the โ€œIโ€™ll just juggle itโ€ urge is. Slow down. Do the next right thing. Let your mind breathe.

๐Ÿก Prepare your โ€œCalm Spaceโ€
Set up a small corner, ritual, or sensory cue that signals safety and grounding. A favourite scent, soft lighting, a playlist, or a notebook โ€” something that brings you back to yourself when the world feels loud.

The holidays donโ€™t have to drain you. With a little intention, they can feel gentler, steadier, and more like you.

๐Ÿ’™ Sending warmth to everyone who needs a softer season this year.

Many couples find themselves stuck in the same cycle โ€” trying harder, talking more, arguing longer โ€” yet nothing really shifts.

Couples therapy invites a different approach: slowing down, noticing the patterns between you, and exploring each other with curiosity rather than defence. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Our couples sessions offer a steady, structured space to understand your dynamic, untangle recurring conflict, and strengthen the connection that brought you together in the first place.

๐Ÿ“… We offer both weekday and limited Saturday appointments, depending on what suits your routine.

If you and your partner are ready to try differently, our team would be glad to support you.

Contact us to book a session or learn more about our relationship-focused approach. ๐Ÿ’™
