Today, World Cancer Day serves as a vital reminder that we have the power to change the future of our health.

Did you know that 30–50% of all cancers can be prevented? This powerful statistic highlights the importance of proactive care.

By prioritising early detection and the treatment of precancerous lesions, we can significantly lower the impact of this disease. If you have concerns or a family history of GI issues, don’t wait to seek expert advice.

February is Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month. While terms like melanoma are well-known, gallbladder and bile duct cancers (cholangiocarcinoma) often go unnoticed. In Australia, approximately 1,300 people are diagnosed annually with these rare cancers.

The biliary system is vital for digestion, with the gallbladder storing bile to help absorb fats. Because these cancers often lack early symptoms, they are difficult to treat; currently, only 1 in 5 patients survive beyond five years.

Raising awareness is the first step toward increased research funding and earlier diagnosis. If you experience persistent symptoms, seek a specialist review. Early intervention is our best defense.

While everyone heals at their own pace, your return-to-work timeline depends largely on the physical demands of your role.

Here is a general guide to help you plan:

🔹Desk/Sedentary Roles: Often possible within 2–3 weeks if cleared.

🔹Light-Duty Jobs: Usually around 3–4 weeks.

🔹Physically Demanding Roles: Expect closer to 6+ weeks, depending on your healing progress.

Regarding activity, movement is medicine! Start with frequent walking and gradually introduce light resistance training only once cleared.

The goal is a safe, sustainable return. Always listen to your body and wait for the "all-clear" during your follow-up.

Weight-loss surgery is a powerful beginning, but the real transformation happens in the months and years that follow. It’s important to remember that procedures like a sleeve gastrectomy are highly effective tools—and like any tool, they work best when supported by a solid foundation.

Sustainable success isn’t about perfection; it’s about the small, daily choices that become lifelong habits. From the way you fuel your body to the importance of mental health and regular movement, every step you take builds a healthier future.

We provide multidisciplinary care designed to support you through every stage of this journey. Whether you are weeks or years post-op, we are here to help you navigate the "new normal" and stay on track.

Undergoing weight loss surgery is a life-changing step, but the surgery itself is just the beginning. The weeks following your procedure are a critical time for healing and retraining your body.

To help our patients navigate this journey, we follow a structured 5-phase dietary plan designed to protect your new stomach and ensure long-term success.

This journey requires patience, but the health rewards are worth every milestone. Read more in my blog: www.drpeterhamer.com.au/sleeve-gastrectomy-recovery-timeline/

Moving toward a life free from anti-reflux medication is a journey that requires a patient, phased approach. Following your reflux surgery with Dr Peter Hamer, the goal is to successfully wean off your prescriptions.

Continue your medication for 3–4 weeks post-op, then transition off slowly. If symptoms temporarily return, simply restart and try weaning again in a fortnight.

After Sleeve Gastrectomy, your new stomach is smaller and more sensitive. One of the most common questions I hear is: "Can I still take my usual painkillers?"

Because surgery changes your stomach’s size and function, your body absorbs medication differently. Some common over-the-counter drugs can now cause irritation or increase the risk of complications like ulcers.

In this blog I’ve outlined the safest choices for pain, fever, and reflux:

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery can be an important step in supporting long-term health and weight management for individuals with obesity. While the procedure plays a role in reducing stomach capacity, ongoing lifestyle changes form a major component of sustainable progress.

Patients often ask about weight-loss patterns, but remember, however, that results vary significantly between individuals, and no specific outcome can be predicted or guaranteed.

Based on clinical research, the patterns often include:

🔹Early Phase: Rapid weight reduction in the first few months.
🔹3–6 Months: Continued loss, though the rate may slow as your body adapts.
🔹12 Months & Beyond: Long-term success relies heavily on your commitment to new habits and follow-up care.
