I remember one of my early therapy sessions ending with a child in tears and me not far behind. Nothing had gone to plan. I felt like I had failed. That I was failing them.

Then a senior therapist came and simply said: “It’s okay to still be learning.”

That moment changed the trajectory of my career.

It reminded me that growth takes time. That holding space for ourselves as therapists is just as important as holding space for our clients.

You know, I still remember early on in private practice, spending hours preparing. Cutting, laminating, creating. I was ready for everything… except for the moment a beautiful child looked at my flashcards and said “no thanks” without saying a word.

That was the moment it all changed.

I got under the table. I followed their lead. I chucked the flashcards and chose connection over productivity. That was the turning point and it brought the fun back into therapy.

If you’ve been wondering if it’s okay to shift gears, to trust your gut and throw out the “shoulds” this is your sign.

And what better opportunity to turn a craft activity into a sequencing activity - take some photos, jumble them up, get the child to put them in order, say a sentence about each one and if you're lucky, even write that sentence too.

Our Story

Di, the Speech Pathologist at Perth Hills Speech Pathology, has a passion for helping all children to be able to communicate and to reach their full potential with whatever their dreams of communication and literacy are. She believes that communication is a basic human right and every person has the right to a robust means of communication. Di is a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist and a Hanen certified Speech Pathologist in the It Takes Two to Talk and More than Words parent programs and the ABC and Beyond program for teachers. Di is also a registered Sounds-Write trainer.
