🦟Happy World Mosquito Day! 🦟

It was on this day in 1897 that a British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross, discovered the link between mosquitoes, malaria and humans.

He found out that the malaria parasite is transmitted to human beings due to the bite of certain mosquitoes.

As today is , the weather warming and a wet summer forecast, conditions ideal for mosquitos, you may want to start thinking about how you will protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites this summer.

🦟Try and avoid areas where mosquitoes are common, like swamps and marshlands.
🦟Wear loose, long and light coloured clothing, especially around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
🦟Wear mosquito repellent. Use brands that contain either DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), apply to all uncovered skin and follow the label directions.
🦟Get rid of mosquitoes around the house by using plug-in insecticide mats, flying insect knock-down sprays, coils and fly screens.
🦟Remove any water-holding containers outside the house where mosquitoes could breed.

Although cases on the South Coast are very low, mosquito borne diseases can cause serious illness.

In NSW arboviruses particularly Ross River, Barmah Forest and Murray Valley Encephalitis are known to cause human disease.

Mosquito-borne diseases in Australia

Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in Australia include Dengue fever, Australian encephalitis, Ross River (RR) virus disease and Barmah Forerst (BF) virus disease. Dengue is the most important viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes afflicting humans in a world context. Clinical symptoms range from mild fevers, to a severe and potentially life threatening haemorrhagic disease. http://medent.usyd.edu.au/arbovirus/mosquit/mosqfact.htm

Over the course of the five-week ‘Mark, Release Recapture’ (MRR) study 3000 male mosquitoes were released and then recaptured through a network of traps.

SHOO FLY! 😒

With an explosion in fly numbers in recent weeks, we sought the important answers.

Did you know there's 30,000 species of fly in Australia but the most common type of fly you're likely to be interacting with are the bush fly and house fly.

No, bush flies are not deliberately seeking out your nostrils or mouth - they don't actually like the dark. They're just after food.

"It's usually female bush flies that are getting right up and personal on your face," says Dr David Yates, director of the CSIRO's Australian National Insect Collection.

"They see us as a resource - flies are coming in to feed on the salts, proteins and carbohydrates and water that we exude on our skins.

"The females need those proteins and liquids in order to mature their eggs."

Don't worry too much about swallowing one - they are a good source of protein, he says.

In fact, flies are important for our ecosystem - as a food source for other animals like birds, and to pollinate plants - just as much as bees.

"Bees usually get all the attention but when people go an study pollination in different ecosystems they usually find that it's flies doing a lot of the work as well.

"Most birds feed on insects and if there weren't insects around there wouldn't be those birds around either."

Next time a fly annoys you, try and think of the good they do. Or not.
