In November this year our practice Principal Cate Menzies was offered the opportunity to work with a team of our Australian Hand Surgeons to provide outreach hand therapy alongside Rosemary Prosser at Hue Hospital in Vietnam. This involved both teaching medical and therapy staff as well as providing therapy. An amazing, challenging and rewarding experience!

In This post we will outline one way of taping a Mallet Finger. The Key of taping a mallet finger is to keep the tip of the finger supported at all times, now this may be with help from someone else, a platform or with the use of a table.

1. Apply the base layer: Whilst supporting the tip of the finger, place the tape on the underside of the finger, lift the tip up and bring the tape over the nail and continue back down.

2. Apply the splint: Line the splint up with with tip of the finger, yours may have a layer of waterproof material underneath.

3. Secure tape around the base: Supporting the tip, apply tape to the base of the splint, this will be half on the splint and half on the skin.

4. Apply the first layer to the splint: Supporting the tip of the finger, place the tape on the underside of the finger, lift the tip up into the splint and bring the tape over and to the back of the splint.

5. Secure the splint: Apply one or two more layers of tape around the splint to secure.

One of the most common Injuries we see in our clinics is a Mallet Finger. A Mallet finger is when the tendon that lifts the tips of the finger is interrupted. This can occur from sporting injuries or direct force when completing Activities of Daily living such as making beds or putting away groceries.

In a Mallet finger the tip will present in a drooped fashion and no matter how hard we try we are unable to lift it. The treatment for a mallet finger is full time splinting for a period of time.

We understand that full time splinting can be cumbersome, and as such have a different range of splints to find a solution. Below are some of the splints that we can make to treat this injury.
