Doulas aren’t the problem!
There’s been a lot of talk about legislating doula support in the Australian media recently. I don’t think this will have the intended effect of keeping women and babies safer. Instead I see it reducing the number of doulas. And those that are working outside of their scope? It won’t change their behaviour but it may well push them more into the margins.

Governments would do better to consider why many women choose to free birth. For the majority it’s because the services they want are not available or they’re scared to give birth in their local hospital due to previous trauma. How about fixing those issues?

No kidding, I use this item ALL the time! It’s a neoprene kneeling pad and it gets pulled out at almost every birth I support. Now at Kmart for $12!!
So if you’re al doula or an expectant family I strongly recommend bringing one to your birth.

Why is it used so often?
❗️it supports active birth positions
❗️is supportive, dense and comfortable
❗️it’s light and easy to slip under a labouring woman
❗️it’s perfect for using in bathrooms as it dries quickly, won’t block any drains
❗️fits easily into small spaces where a larger floor mat isn’t suitable

Things I’m taking to hospital with me that I also recommend to my clients! Because recovery is recovery….
• bone broth & arnica
• water bottle & .co hydration drinks
• peppermint tea for trapped gas in my system
• heat pack
• dried pears
• sweet & savoury congee

Doulas are not there because you can't cope, we remind you that you can. Birth is a lot, it's supposed to be, but it's not bigger than you.
We reassure you, help you feel calm in the storm of labour. We guide your partner towards being the best loving support they can be. We're there for all of it, we're there for you.

Partners - are you ready to support her in labour and birth?

Much of your support can be intuitive, you know her intimately and often know what she needs. But there are 2 aspects that you need to consider to really be able to step up in this journey.
✨
The first - you need to understand the physiology of birth and what specific things can be helpful to best support its progress. Have tools that you are familiar with and have practiced together so that they come easily to you when you are potentially stressed and finding it hard to think.
✨
And second - consider your response to seeing your partner in labour. You have to manage yourself emotionally so that you can be fully present and be the support that she needs. It can be hard to witness the intensity of birth, hard not to feel vulnerable yourself when you know that your baby is coming. But she needs a rock to lean on so work on your own mindset as part of your preparation and go into this with confidence.

Great ways to work on both of these aspects are to take an independent childbirth class and work with a doula who is focused on helping you both feel confident and empowered.
