Melanoma is one of the most common and serious types of skin cancer diagnosed in Australia each year. It is also one of the most preventable and survivable if diagnosed and treated early.
Preventing melanoma is as simple as slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. Use this simple routine every time you head out to enjoy the sun.
Know the signs and catch melanoma early
Melanoma affects the cells that colour our skin, so the first signs are often visual. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious with this simple alphabet checklist:
A – ASYMMETRY Is one half of a growth different to the other?
B – BORDERS Are the edges irregular and organic instead of smooth and even?
C – COLOUR Does the mark have multiple shades or colour patches?
D – DIAMETER Is the spot larger than the size of a pencil eraser (6mm) or growing over time?
E – EVOLVING Has it changed since you last looked, become tender, firm, or started to bleed or itch?
Check your skin regularly
Regular skin checks save lives – especially if you have a family history of skin cancer or a personal history of tanning and sunburn.
