❤️ Heart Health & Your Lymphatic System: The Hidden Connection

By Bianca Botha, CLT, RLD, MLDT & CDS
Understanding how lymphatic flow shapes cardiovascular health — and why it matters now more than ever 🌿

🌊 Introduction: The Body’s Two Fluid Networks

When most people think of heart health, they immediately think of blood pressure, cholesterol, and arteries. But there’s another fluid system running quietly alongside the cardiovascular system — the lymphatic system 💚

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in:
• 💧 Regulating fluid balance
• 🛡️ Supporting immune defense
• 🧹 Clearing metabolic waste
• 🧬 Assisting tissue repair and healing

Emerging research shows that lymphatic dysfunction doesn’t just cause swelling — it can directly influence cardiovascular strain, inflammation, and long-term heart health ❤️

🔄 1. How the Lymphatic & Cardiovascular Systems Work Together

Your cardiovascular system delivers oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. As blood passes through capillaries, fluid naturally leaks into surrounding tissues. This fluid becomes interstitial fluid, and excess must be cleared.

That is where the lymphatic system steps in 🌿

Lymphatic vessels:
1. Collect excess tissue fluid
2. Filter it through lymph nodes 🧠
3. Return it to the bloodstream near the heart ❤️

This partnership prevents fluid overload, supports immune balance, and protects cardiovascular efficiency.

When lymph flow slows, fluid congestion and inflammatory pressure increase, placing additional strain on the heart.

💥 2. When Lymphatic Flow Slows, the Heart Feels It

💧 Fluid Imbalance & Swelling (Edema)

Sluggish lymphatic drainage allows fluid to pool — especially in the legs, abdomen, and face. This increases vascular pressure and forces the heart to work harder.

🔥 Inflammation & Immune Load

Lymph nodes are immune checkpoints. When drainage is impaired:
• inflammatory molecules linger
• immune signaling becomes dysregulated
• cardiovascular inflammation rises

Chronic inflammation is now a recognized driver of hypertension, vascular damage, and heart disease.

🧠 3. The Glymphatic System: Heart, Brain & Detox

The brain has its own lymph-like drainage system called the glymphatic system 🌙

This system:
• clears waste during deep sleep 😴
• supports neurological health
• influences stress regulation and blood pressure

Poor glymphatic clearance has been linked to neuroinflammation, sleep disruption, and increased cardiovascular stress.

🩺 4. Conditions Where Lymph & Heart Interact

Common examples include:
• ❤️ Hypertension
• 🦵 Chronic leg or ankle swelling
• 🧬 Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions
• ✂️ Post-surgical or scar-related lymph restriction

These conditions often involve fluid overload + inflammation, stressing both systems simultaneously.

🚨 5. Why Lymph Is Often Missed in Heart Care

Standard heart assessments focus on:
• blood pressure
• cholesterol
• ECGs
• imaging

But lymphatic function:
• doesn’t show up clearly on blood tests
• doesn’t have one “marker”
• presents through symptoms, not numbers

Symptoms like persistent swelling, fatigue, bloating, sinus congestion, and slow healing often point to lymphatic involvement, even when cardiac tests look “normal.”

🌿 6. Supporting Heart Health Through Lymph Flow

Simple, evidence-based support includes:
• 🚶‍♀️ Gentle movement & walking
• 💨 Diaphragmatic breathing
• 💧 Adequate hydration
• 🥗 Anti-inflammatory nutrition
• 🤲 Gentle lymphatic therapy (when appropriate)

These support both circulation and cardiac efficiency when applied correctly and safely.

⚠️ 7. Signals Your Body May Need Lymphatic Support

Pay attention to:
• heavy or swollen legs
• facial puffiness
• fluid that doesn’t reduce overnight
• chronic fatigue
• pressure after exercise
• slow recovery

These are signals, not diagnoses — but they deserve attention 💚

🌸 Conclusion: Two Systems, One Healing Story

The heart and lymphatic system work together to maintain:
• fluid balance
• immune health
• inflammation control
• whole-body resilience

True cardiovascular care is not just about arteries — it’s about supporting lymphatic flow, reducing inflammatory burden, and restoring balance throughout the body.

✨ When lymph flows well, the heart works with less strain.

Testimonials 💫

I had my first massage at Koala Wellness and Spa this week and it was fantastic. Time was spent understanding what my needs were and Than tailored a deep tissue massage to address my areas of concern. Even though it was a deep tissue massage it was still very relaxing. She was able to relieve the tension in my neck that I went there for and she also explained how other areas in my body would have been contributing to that and addressed them too.
Than has a lovely space and she is very professional. She also has an online booking system which is great. I will definitely be returning.

Don't even think about getting a massage if you experience dizziness or lightheadedness. You need to have the cause diagnosed first – because if it turns out the patient's symptoms are due to a vascular abnormality, it's dangerous. Consider this a warning.

Article by Traditional Thai Medicine Practitioner, Kamollasarn Cheevasathvechkul

Traditional Thai Medicine Practitioner / Traditional Thai Pharmacy Practitioner

Even though ruptured blood vessels during massage don't happen to everyone, and they don't happen often, it can still occur at any time in patients with risk factors. Some massage therapists might say, "I've been massaging patients with these symptoms without any problems." Let me tell you, "It might be fine today, but it could be next time." If you don't have knowledge about vascular diseases, absolutely do not risk massaging a patient with this condition.

*** The question is: How do you know if someone's dizziness or lightheadedness is due to a vascular abnormality? The answer is: a thorough examination and medical history are necessary. As a Traditional Thai Medicine practitioner, I cannot ignore the importance of examination and diagnosis.

**********************************

The symptom of "dizziness or lightheadedness" (specifically in cases of vascular issues) can be caused by both stenosis and aneurysm. Both groups are equally dangerous for the following reasons:

1) If a patient has a stenosis and undergoes massage, a blood clot could further obstruct the blood vessel, potentially leading to sudden muscle weakness.

*** In Traditional Thai Medicine, there's a possibility of a sudden onset of "wind of the tongue and body" (or "wind of the tongue and body") after a massage. If this occurs, immediate medical attention within 4 hours is crucial. Waiting beyond this time may prevent hospital doctors from administering emergency medication effectively.

2) If a patient has an aneurysm and undergoes massage, the ruptured blood vessel could occur. The symptoms depend on which blood vessel is affected, whether it's inside or outside the skull.

*** In Traditional Thai Medicine, several wind-related diseases can cause these symptoms. But if we're talking about the most serious type, it would probably be "Aneurysm."

*********************************

For example, symptoms that patients with Aneurysms may experience include:

- A throbbing sensation in the abdomen, like a strong pulse.
- Deep, central abdominal pain (in the case of abdominal blood vessels).
- Constant lower back pain (in the case of abdominal blood vessels).
- Radiating pain to the back or side (in the case of abdominal blood vessels).
- Unusual headaches on one side.
- A feeling of pressure behind the eye.
- Occasional double vision.
- Drooping eyelid on one side.

*** And let me tell you, these symptoms are not limited to these; there are many more depending on the underlying blood vessel causing the condition.

*** For anyone who thinks that if they have a blood vessel problem, massage to improve blood circulation will solve it, I recommend they study blood vessels further, because it's definitely not what you think.

Driving with Sciatica: How to Relieve Pain🚘
👉Our tips for reducing sciatic pain while driving
1. Prepare your vehicle for driving:

• Avoid seats that are too soft, which can cause poor posture.
• Use a cushion to maintain dynamic posture.
• Tilt your seatback slightly to increase the angle between your torso and legs.
• Adjust the seat for good lumbar support.

2. Use relaxation techniques:

Tension and stress can worsen pain by increasing muscle tightness. Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or listening to calming music to relax and reduce muscle tension during your trip.

3. Use heat or ice:

Apply heat or cold to the painful area before hitting the road. This can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. The sciatica car cushion Ergoccyx includes a high-viscosity fluid pocket that can be chilled in the freezer without altering its consistency.

4. Avoid leaning forward too much:

Use your seatback to support your back and reduce muscle tension. Use a back cushion and seat cushion to improve your position and provide greater comfort and support.

5. Plan frequent breaks:

Even with good equipment and all these tips, it's still important to take regular breaks to avoid staying in the same position too long. Stop every hour or two to stretch your legs. Walking a bit and doing gentle stretches can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.

6. Exercises in the car:

Gently perform some leg and foot flexion and extension exercises to stimulate blood circulation.

14/03/2026

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a condition where the ulnar nerve gets compressed or irritated at the elbow.

The ulnar nerve runs from the neck → through the elbow → to the hand. When it is squeezed at the elbow, it can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the arm and hand.

🔎 Common symptoms
• Numbness or tingling in the ring finger and little finger
• Pain on the inner side of the elbow
• Weak grip or difficulty holding objects
• A feeling like pins and needles in the hand
• Symptoms often get worse when the elbow is bent for a long time, such as:
• holding a phone
• sleeping with the elbow bent
• resting the elbow on a desk

⚠️ Common causes
• Keeping the elbow bent for long periods
• Leaning on the elbow frequently
• Repetitive arm movements
• Injury to the elbow

🩺 Basic treatment
• Avoid bending the elbow for long periods
• Avoid resting your elbow on hard surfaces
• Stretch and move the arm regularly
• Pain relievers such as Paracetamol may help

🚨 See a doctor if
• Numbness keeps getting worse
• Your hand becomes weak
• Symptoms last more than 2–3 weeks

💡 Note: Cubital Tunnel Syndrome usually causes pain near the elbow, not near the armpit. Pain near the armpit is more often related to muscle strain or swollen lymph nodes.
