Clinical Research Trials are a crucial treatment option for patients to access new therapeutic options. The most reliable and the only accepted scientific method to take discoveries from the lab bench to the bedside is testing the safety and efficacy of these new interventions in clinical trials -- research studies that test new methods of prevention, detection, screening and treatment of diseases. Whilst large national and international databases of clinical research trials exist, it is a frustrating task for a clinician or patient to find suitable trials for individual cases. There was no easy and quick source of a current and comprehensive lists of open recruiting trials for any particular discipline. Even if a trial is found from these sources, the location is often only found by word-of mouth. There are many barriers to recruitment to research trials, and knowledge management was needed-current, easy and targeted. The information required resided in each of the trial units themselves. In NSW, Haematology has about 18 separate trial units, and individual research trials open and close constantly at each of the sites. The Haematology Clinical Research Network (HCRN/NSW) is a team of research trial unit managers across NSW who aimed to develop a a mobile App for quick access to knowledge of current open trials for clinicians and patients.

Sydney Local Health District is now supporting easy access to current clinical trials via the ClinTrial Refer App at Concord Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). Sydney Local Health District has a long and proud history of health and medical research across the healthcare continuum with more than 96 departments involved in research, from RPA Hospital’s Newborn Care Unit to Concord Hospital’s Centre for Education and Research in Aging.
