RECAPPING Day 1 of IFSO Word Conference 2025 in Santiago, Chile

This has got to be the biggest turn out for IFSO with 2000+ specialists across the world gathering here in Santiago.

We have had a jam packed day with several highlights:
- Strong focus and shift to combined therapy (medication and surgery) for treating Obesity - the dawn of a new era
- The NEW LANCET STATEMENT - Changing of the definition of Obesity to remove world wide stigma
- Shift of focus away from BMI (weight loss) to other factors in defining treatment efficacy
- Emphasis of Obesity as a disease spectrum and adjusting management pathways
- Integration of AI into the surgical space
- New Novel techniques and technology including more on duodenal endo-sleeve, ablation therapy, Surgical Magnets and a shift towards more Robotic Surgery

Its amazing how quick the field of BARIATRICS is changing and its great to be part of it.

There are a lot of benefits with weight loss medications but we do need to be mindful when taking them.

Just like surgery, weight loss medications can affect appetite and impact on nutrition. This is why it is absolutely crucial that anyone using it SHOULD be guided by an EXPERIENCED QUALIFIED TEAM of doctors and dieticians.

Part of the follow up includes regular nutritional blood tests and checks for side effects. Proper guidance with adequate nutritional intake through meal plans are also important especially when factoring in reduced drive and appetite for food.

Honoured to be speaking and moderating sessions at The Next Global IFSO in Santiago Chile in September this year!

I will be part of a large Asia Pacific contingent at the annual bariatric meet.

Its going to be a blast and I will be sharing with you all my experiences in South America. Looking forward to bring back new ideas and thinking to bariatric services here in Australia!

Spent the tail end of last week in Canberra for the Annual ANZMOSS bariatric conference.
- thanks to the organising committee for organising it all. Always good to meet colleagues and friends across Australia to discuss everything bariatrics!

Of course no conference is complete without abit of family fun as we got the kids to Questacon and Corin Forest.

Looking forward now to the next big one - IFSO 2025 Santiago, Chile here I come!
