'Act now for a dementia-friendly future'! That's the 2023 Dementia Action Week theme. Now is the time to shed the light on dementia and the impact it has on all of our communities.

Imagine being treated differently just because you have been diagnosed with a disease like cancer or diabetes. This is the reality for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Dementia Australia research shows 81 per cent of those with a loved one living with dementia felt that people in shops, cafes and restaurants treated people with dementia differently.

That’s why this Dementia Action Week everyone is encouraged to take a few simple actions to create a dementia-friendly future for all Australians.

A dementia-friendly future is a future that is better for everyone in the community.

Want to know more? Head to the Dementia Australia website for a range of information and more on Dementia Action Week, September 18th to 24th. Why not take the Dementia Action Week pledge to create a Dementia-Friendly Community.

Connecting with others is so important to reducing the negative impacts of loneliness and social isolation.

The holistic health benefits of connecting in with friends and family are endless, here's just a few things to consider.

Research has shown that prolonged loneliness is associated with increased risk for premature death, similar to smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity. Other health consequences associated with loneliness, include elevated risk for heart disease and stroke, and it is associated with increased GP visits and emergency room visits.

Loneliness has also been found to increase the risk of developing dementia by as much as 20%. Loneliness has an influence similar to other more well-established dementia risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, physical inactivity and hearing loss.

Maintaining high quality relationships may be a key for protecting brain health from the negative impacts of loneliness.

Need more tips on how to develop connections? Why not book an appointment? We can work on what's holding you back from living a fulfilling connecting life.

National Child Protection Week is September 3rd to 9th 2023. The message 'Every child in every community needs a fair go' aims to promote a safe and supported life for every child, now and into the future.

The 2023 theme 'Where we start matters' addresses the large complex policy problems such as child abuse and neglect, and the outcomes in terms of personal, social and economic issues.

Knowing how we can make a difference and where to start is often what holds people back from starting. You can use this theme in ways that are most relevant to those you work and interact with.

For instance this could include focusing on:

- Supporting parents to access services so that all families have the opportunity to give every child a great start
- Supporting organisations to be safe and child-focused so they can give every child a great start
- Supporting communities and making sure that every neighbourhood has what it needs to give every child a great start
