Bonnie Rotheram's had a cracker of a year!

The Nowa Nowa local recently completed a traineeship with us and was a finalist (the youngest ever!) in the Wurreker Awards, recognising excellence in Koorie training, education and employment.

Bonnie has worked with us since she was 16-years-old. That's right, now 17 she still needs a lift to work into Lakes with her mum. Her face may be familiar as she's part of our customer service team, often helping people book in for podiatry, physiotherapy and gym-support programs at the Jemmeson Street site.

She's also been involved with the Lakes Entrance Football Netball Club, playing a key role in their under-17 netball premiership.

"I'd like to be a role model for kids my age who aren't enjoying school, there are so many other ways around it all," Bonnie said.

"The study I did for my traineeship, I would never have done that at school, but here with the help and support I was able to participate in learning," she said.

GLCH is proud to support local talent like Bonnie. And we'd like to thank the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. for hosting the Wurreker Awards earlier this year.

"Bonnie is an asset to GLCH. She works hard to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients and patients, each and every day," said Bec Woodland, GLCH Chief Operating Officer.

At our very first Walk to Change the Story in 2018, Toorloo Arm Primary School gave us a moment we’ll never forget. With the support of the fabulous Andrea Farley, students explored family violence and respectful relationships, then bravely shared their artwork, their voices and an original song in front of hundreds at the All Abilities Park in Bairnsdale.

🎶
“working together is what we do,
come on everybody, me and you,
we’re here to stop the hurt around us,
join the program, get on the bus”
🎶

Their message was simple and powerful: change takes all of us. We each have a role to play, and when we work together, our impact is so much stronger.

These kids (now adults), and so many like them, are true changemakers

For Renee and Brady from Tradies Food & Catering in Bairnsdale, joining the Catering for Good directory was a natural next step for their business.

"We do a lot of in-house food options and we wanted to figure out how to expand that," Renee says. "We thought catering to provide good, healthy food for people would be the next right step."

The Catering for Good Directory, an initiative by the Healthy Eating Advisory Service, connects workplaces with local catering businesses committed to providing nutritious food choices.

The directory has addressed a critical challenge many local businesses face - getting their name out there.

"A lot of people don't even know that we exist or that we do catering," Renee says. "I think a website like Catering for Good is wonderful to get your name out there. And again, the healthy foods aspect of it is awesome as well."

Throughout the onboarding process, our Health Promotion team provided support. The timing was particularly challenging as Renee and Brady were celebrating the arrival of their new baby, but the support hasn't stopped.

Beyond marketing benefits, the experience changed Renee's approach to menu development. "It probably opened my eyes up a little bit more to what to look for in healthy eating on the dietary side," she says. "I thought it was quite handy especially the suggestions that came up for how we could change things out to make it healthier."

Renee's advice to local workplaces is straightforward: "Get onto it and start using it. The more businesses that get on there and start looking for healthy options, the more well-known the portal's going to be." She believes it will create a powerful ripple effect. "When everybody uses it and then there's that one business that doesn't, everyone will be like, 'Oh, this is a website we use. It's good, get onto it.'"

This year, as the 16 Days of Activism shines a light on ending gender-based violence, we’re reflecting on the incredible individuals and organisations working every day to create safer, more respectful communities.

This year’s theme, Changemakers, speaks to the heart of our work. Our teams play a vital role in responding to and reducing family violence across East Gippsland. This is work powered by compassionate, skilled people who want every child to grow up safe, and every individual and family to have the chance to thrive. We’re proud to stand beside those who reach out to us, offering support, safety and care through all stages of life.

The reality in East Gippsland is confronting (see the statistics). Our region has endured disproportionately high rates of family violence for many years, and while the challenge is big, the solution must be shared. Real change takes all of us: early education, strong justice responses, community leadership and meaningful government action.

We’re focused on what we can influence right now. Changing the story starts with shifting attitudes, beliefs and everyday behaviours around gender, relationships, safety and help-seeking. It’s slow, steady work - but it’s work worth doing.

Together, we can Change the Story.

🧡 Hands Up to Change the Story. 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

As part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, our staff are wearing their Hands Up to Tell the Story T-shirts. This is a reminder that every one of us has a role in creating a safer, more respectful community.

The Hands Up message is simple: when we raise our hands, we commit to calling out disrespect, challenging harmful attitudes, and supporting those who need us. Prevention isn’t just policy, it’s something we practise in our everyday interactions, workplaces, homes and communities.

This year’s theme, Changemakers, recognises the courage of individuals. By raising awareness, promoting respect and modelling equality, we’re helping change the story here in East Gippsland. And the story needs changing, as East Gippsland has the highest rate of family violence incidents in Victoria.

🧡 Join us

Over the next 16 days, we invite you to learn, share and take action. Small steps like challenging a sexist joke, checking in on a friend and modelling healthy relationships all help build the future we want for our region.

Together, we can create a community where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.
Together, we can Change the Story.

⚠️ Trigger warning: family and gender-based violence

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day that calls us to reflect, to honour those who’ve been harmed, and to recommit to building a safer future for women and girls.

It also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global movement that has been inspiring action and advocacy since 1991.

Here in East Gippsland, the issue is heartbreakingly close. Our region continues to record the highest rates of family violence in Victoria (per 100,000 population). In the past year alone, Victoria Police responded to 2,499 incidents locally, each one representing real harm, real fear, and a community that deserves better.

Nationally, the picture is equally devastating. So far this year, 62 women have been killed by violence. Each one a person loved, missed and deserving of so much more.

Over the next 16 days, we’re raising our voices, our awareness and our collective courage. We invite you to join us in challenging harmful attitudes, supporting victim-survivors, and championing prevention. Together, we can help change the story🧡

If you or someone you know needs support, please contact Safe Steps on 1800 015 188.

At our 50th Annual General Meeting last week, we farewelled Director Bruce Hurley, who has stepped down from the GLCH Board after more than a decade of dedicated service.

Bruce previously led GLCH as CEO from 2004–2011, guiding the organisation through a period of significant growth before joining the Board in 2021. He describes his time with GLCH as “the best job I’ve had.”

One of his proudest achievements was working alongside the local Aboriginal community to establish the Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association in 2006. “Aunty Phyllis Andy came to my office… and said, ‘Bruce, we have to do something for my people.’ That was a pivotal moment.”

Bruce’s retirement comes as GLCH marks 50 years of community health service. Reflecting on this milestone, CEO Anne-Maree Kaser shared:

“The willingness to meet people where they are, with whatever they need, continues to define us.”

We also had the pleasure of welcoming John Kavadis to the Board. John brings strong governance experience and expertise in IT, cybersecurity, strategy and financial management.

Our volunteers came together in Bairnsdale last week to learn about the Federal Government’s new Support at Home program, which replaces the previous Home Care Packages and aims to reduce wait times for in-home support.

Support at Home intake coordinator Terry-Anne Gaskin led the session, explaining what the reforms mean for people already receiving care, and those seeking support for the first time.

“We are paddling our way through these waters. It’s a complex system, and we’re working closely with volunteers and clients to make it easier to navigate,” she said.

Volunteers shared how helpful the session was:

Marg Porter, Bairnsdale Meals on Wheels volunteer said: “Some of the people we deliver to have no family nearby. Having access to this information is so important.”

Terry-Anne added that anyone with questions about how the reforms affect their care can call us on 5152 0075.

For volunteering info, contact our engagement officer Karren Hackling on 5155 8300, or tap the link in our bio to visit our webpage.
