Fearless equine support BA (Psych) Grad.Dip (Counselling) PACFA registered. Ordained by the magic of horses🐓

Horses are creatures who work with people because they chose to; this willingness from the horse to connect with a human through mutual trust and respect provides a great platform for social/emotional learning and counselling. Equine Assisted Therapy is also about using the horse's natural ability to honestly reflect the mood, energy and attitudes of those around them. This reflection can enable people to find insight in to the core issues which impact their health, well being and relationships in their every day life. The practice of spending quality time with horses also allows a person to experience living in the present moment which helps to relieve anxiety. When we are working or playing with the horse we can learn new ways of being focused on the here and now and less focused on past and future - as these are usually the cause of stresses.

Winter is here, and before you start letting yourself stay inside and become static, remenber that moving not only keeps emotions and moods regulated, but also keeps you warm!

Surely it’s the very ā€œothernessā€ of horses, with their endless beauty, exquisite sensitivity and finely honed instinctual actions which opens and melts our hearts. Making them so attractive to so many, even given their immense size, power and strength which can equally induce fear and vulnerability in us.

All of these qualities and so many more enables a wide scope of possibilities for self-reflection, learning and healing. As indeed also, the potential for inter-species co-creation of deep and moving connections through sharing space with these wonderful animals. In their presence we can once again glimpse inklings of our own intuition, more subtle awareness, energetic sensitivity and the animal within.

Something about humans is clearly also attractive to horses, given their willingness to live and work alongside us in so many capacities down the ages. Like powerful magnets, each species continues to be drawn to the other and to be willing to explore and expand new frontiers of possibility.

Such rich potential exists when we embrace this otherness and honour the horses for being just who they are, and for listening and being ready to pause and reflect with an openness to their suggestions and teachings. There is pure wonder to be found through marvelling at this ā€œothernessā€ that can fill us with a sense of awe and love, opening heart, mind and soul in the process.

It is through these ways and so many more that we experience an equal interaction based on respect and curiosity and move beyond closed minds and assumptions about horses that keep both species limited and unfulfilled.

"Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′ healing ′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.

According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body.

While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.

Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a ′′ coherent ′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can ′′ feel better ′′ when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.

A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.

In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy."~ Picture credit goes to the artist, Valerie Eric

Emotional healing can happen most effectively in a safe space. As friends, family members, or therapists, we strive to provide those safe spaces for friends or loved ones to share their traumas, fears and losses, and yet sometimes that isn’t enough. As humans, we bring in our biases, past experiences, and judgments, even when we try not to.

Horses don’t have those biases and can provide a safe space and relationship for emotional healing to occur. By incorporating horses in mental health sessions, clients may feel a sense of peace that they might not have otherwise, allowing them to reach a deeper level of vulnerability.
