On this day, March 9th in 1936, our Param Guru Swami Sri Yukteswar entered Mahasamadhi.

Disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya; Guru of Sri Yogananda. Swami Sri Yukteswar is revered as a Jnanavatar; “Incarnation of Wisdom”.

Swami Sri Yukteswar would console students:
“Forget the past. The vanished lives of all men are dark with many shames. Human conduct is ever unreliable until man is anchored in the Divine. Everything in future will improve if you are making a spiritual effort now”. (Autobiography of a Yogi).

Paramahansa Yogananda writes:
“Sri Yukteswar fitted the Vedic definition of a man of God: ‘Softer than the flower, where kindness is concerned; stronger than the thunder, where principles are at stake’…His feet were firm on the earth, his head in the haven of heaven.

Each day with him was a new experience in joy, peace, and wisdom…Quietly sitting beside him, I would feel his bounty pouring peacefully over my being”. (Autobiography of a Yogi).

On March 7th 1952, the incarnation of Paramahansa Yogananda came to a perfect close, ending in Mahasamadhi (a yogi’s final conscious exit from the body).

Sri Daya Mata writes:
“With such sweet love and compassion, his eyes like soft pools of divine bliss, he answered: ‘When I am gone, only love can take my place. Be so drunk with the love of God that you will know nothing but God; and give that love to all.’” (Finding the Joy Within You)

Paramahansa Yogananda left his body with these last words, from his poem ‘My India’:

‘Mortal fires may raze all her homes and golden paddy fields;
Yet to sleep on her ashes and dream immortality,
O India, I will be there!
God made the earth, and man made confining countries
And their fancy-frozen boundaries.
Where Ganges, woods, Himalayan caves, and men dream God -
I am hallowed; my body touched that sod.’

Paramahansaji slid to the floor, a beatific smile on his face. He had often said: “I do not wish to die in bed, but with my boots on, speaking of God and India”. (Paramahansa Yogananda, In Memoriam)
