💬 Did you know that over a quarter of Australian children grow up hearing a language other than English at home? 🌍

Our latest blog, “Bilingual Children and Speech Development: What Parents Need to Know,” explores how children learn multiple languages, what’s typical in bilingual development, and when to seek support.

✨ Spoiler: Being bilingual does not cause speech or language difficulties — in fact, it can bring many lifelong advantages!

Ways to support your child with their stutter at home 💛

If you're waiting for support, try these simple things at home:
🕰️ Give them time to speak — pause before you respond to them
🗣️ Speak slowly and calmly to model relaxed speech
👂 Listen without jumping in to finish their words
🌟 Praise their ideas, not just their words

Building their confidence is the most powerful thing you can do. And when you’re ready, we’re here to help.

📚 Strategies to support Speech Sound Development: Repeat & Expand

When your child says a word incorrectly, try this:
👶 Child: “Tat!”
👩‍👧 You: “Yes, that’s a cat — a fluffy cat!”
This technique models the correct sound without making them feel wrong or pressured.

Why We Use a Responsive Feeding Approach 🧡

Traditional feeding therapy often focuses on getting kids to eat more — but this can create stress, resistance, or even fear of mealtimes.

At Inner West Paediatrics, we use a responsive feeding approach that focuses on:
🍽️ Building trust
🧠 Honouring your child’s cues
❤️ Supporting autonomy and choice

This approach encourages children to feel safe and in control — leading to more meaningful, long-term progress with food.

Here’s when to seek support:

🗣️ Speech difficulties or unclear sounds
🍎 Trouble with chewing or food texture
🪥 Difficulty cleaning teeth or using their tongue functionally

Our trained speech pathologists can assess your child and work with trusted professionals (like ENTs or dentists) to help you decide what’s best. Check out our blog on tongue tie in the link below.

🎯 Strategies to support Speech Sound Development: Be a Speech Role Model
Want to support your child’s speech at home? Start with YOU! Speak clearly and slowly, and gently emphasise sounds during everyday conversations.

➡️ “Wow, look at the ssssun!” 🌞
Model the correct pronunciation naturally — it helps children hear and learn how sounds are used!
