When you try to be someone you’re not there are several things that can happen

There will be a lack of authenticity by pretending to be someone you’re not & you can lose your genuine self which can lead to feelings of emptiness or a disconnection from your true identity

Maintaining a façade means stress & pressure & a continuous effort to keep imitating someone else’s personality which can take a toll on your mental & emotional well-being

It can cause a massive strain on relationships particularly when people realise you’re not being genuine. It can cause a lack of trust & people may distance themselves from you. By pretending to be someone you’re not means you’re at risk of damaging or losing relationships

When you try to mould yourself into someone else’s identity it can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction & unhappiness. It can also cause you to suppress your true talents, passions & desires because you aren’t truly aligned with your authentic self which can lead to a lack of fulfillment & feelings of discontentment

When you try to be someone you’re not, not only do you inhibit your own personal growth, but it stops you from embracing & accepting who you are which can lead to depression & anxiety. Authentic personal growth can only come from embracing your true self & loving who you truly are

You can lose your sense of identity when you continue down the path of inauthenticity. You may end up feeling confused or even disorientated regarding your true identity & become unsure of your own likes, dislikes, strengths & weaknesses because you’ve been suppressing your true self for too long

Not only is it important for your own happiness & well-being to embrace your own unique qualities, interests & values, only by being your true authentic self can you ever build genuine relationships with others, harness your own potential & foster personal growth

It takes so much more effort & energy to try to be anybody else other than yourself!

We have all been slaves chained to our past at some stage & some of us choose to free ourselves & some of us choose to remain slaves

The chains represent;

• Limiting & negative self-beliefs you still hold on to consciously & unconsciously believe about yourself like; feeling unworthy, feeling unlovable, feeling like you don’t deserve to be happy or not feeling good enough
• Unprocessed & stuck emotions in your body like; holding on to anger & resentment towards the people who hurt you or continuing to feel guilt or shame because of past mistakes
• Fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of letting go
• Being in denial of your own emotional/physical pain, trauma or emotional struggles & putting on a brave face while feeling like your drowning on the inside
• Negative self-talk which only puts yourself down & lowers self-esteem causing self-loathing

We all have the choice to keep those chains on or to remove them

The way we react to situations mostly stems from learned behaviour from our upbringing

Letting go is true freedom

Yes it can be difficult to let some things go, but what is the real reason why you are choosing to hold on to it!?

Whether you hold on purely because you don’t want to seem like you are too forgiving, or you want to ‘punish’ someone for hurting you, the longer you hold on to something, the longer you hold yourself prisoner of the chains of anger & resentment

You only punish yourself when you choose to hold on

Holding on affects us on many different levels & creates rigidity, stagnation & tension within the body

My job as a therapist is to assist my clients in letting go of anything they are knowingly or unknowingly holding on to & the release is such a feeling of freedom for them & once that stagnant energy has been released, it frees up more space within & allows the body’s ‘chi’ to flow freely once again

All of my clients experience feeling much lighter after letting go because they have lightened the ‘load’ of stuff they were carrying on their shoulders that were burdening them & only weighing them down & holding them back from moving forward

And too many people speak to themselves in such a negative & shaming way, that they would NEVER dare to speak to others the same way!

What is the difference!?

Self awareness & consistency is key in changing this very bad habit

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you are saying that ‘what that person did to you was ok’, it just means you are allowing yourself to be free from the temporary jail sentence you put yourself in by holding onto to the past for so long and allowing that person to hold power over you
