The importance of Pre-Conception Preparation
For a myriad of reasons couples are delaying having children until they are in their 30’s. The up side of this is that they have more time to focus on them-selves as a couple, more time to build careers and to set up their homes before bringing children into their world. The down-side is that as people get older their fertility declines.
By the time a woman is 35 her natural fertility may have fallen considerably from what it was in her 20’s and men are not exempt from age related fertility decline either. This is because as we age the DNA in our cells gradually becomes damaged and our new cells are being made based on that damaged DNA. S***m are very susceptible to this damage as it takes 3 months to completely make new s***m, eggs are a little different as a woman is born with all her immature eggs in the ovaries however the environment in which these eggs mature definitely affects their viability.
Damage to our DNA is caused by the toxins in our environment and foods… pesticides, herbicides, phthalates, PCBs, BPA, PBDEs, dioxins, furans, organic solvents, electromagnetic radiation exposure… the list seems endless. Lifestyle factors, smoking, caffeine, alcohol and other recreational pursuits, some pharmaceuticals, weight gain, lack of regular exercise and stress, stress, stress, all further impact on the ability to produce healthy viable eggs and s***m.
Pre-Conception Preparation should start 4 months before trying to conceive and is extremely valuable for couples who are considering IVF or other assisted reproductive technology support. These interventions are very expensive, invasive and emotionally challenging so doing everything possible to build the vitality of both parents is important before starting IVF treatment.
Work done in the leadup to IVF helps protect the integrity of the DNA and ensures the vitality of the eggs and s***m are as good as possible to increase the likely-hood of producing healthy embryo’s and a successful pregnancy.
Preconception care increases your chances of falling pregnant, helps to achieve a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby and a good recovery after the birth.
