One of my favourite things to do to reset my nervous system is to just water the garden, relax and watch natures tv. What do you like doing?

14/03/2026

I made a mistake….THIS is the epiphany, not what I posted earlier. It was only part of the bigger picture.

I also said “going strong” instead of “growing strong” whoops. 😅 please don’t let these take away from this huge moment for me!

We now have a problem, solution and a program! Reach out if you’d like more info!

After working with lots of different dads over the years. I’ve realised dads don’t disengage from parenting because they don’t care.

They disengage because they feel incompetent.

No one taught us how to:

• regulate a stressed nervous system
• handle toddler meltdowns
• share the mental load
• repair after conflict
• lead emotionally in a family

So we retreat to places we do feel competent.

Work.
Projects.
Screens.
The gym.

Meanwhile our kids are chasing the one thing they actually want *our presence*

Strong dads aren’t born. They’re trained. And most of us were never taught.

Let’s keep growing strong together.

Cheers,
Si

While the news cycle is full of panic, conflict and people lining up for petrol…

Today I watched my daughter spend half an hour just drawing and singing happily.

Completely unaware of the chaos adults create in the world.

It reminded me of something important.

The world our kids experience is mostly the one right in front of them.

The breakfast table.
The walk to the park.
The project on the kitchen bench.
The calm nervous system of the parent beside them.

We can’t control the global headlines.

But we can control the environment our kids grow up in.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our families is turn the news off, make a coffee, and spend an hour drawing, reading or playing together.

That’s the world they’ll remember.

Shout out to one of the dads I’m working with right now.

I’ll keep this anonymous, but he knows who he is.

This bloke is doing the work.

Not the Instagram version of “self-improvement”.
The real stuff.

• Looking honestly at his patterns
• Regulating his nervous system instead of reacting
• Showing up for his partner differently
• Taking responsibility for his health
• Repairing when he gets it wrong
• Staying consistent even when motivation drops

None of this is glamorous.

It’s slow, uncomfortable, and repetitive.

But week by week I’m watching something shift.

More steadiness.
More presence.
More leadership in his family.

This is what Strong Dads is about.

Not perfect fathers.

Dads who are willing to grow.

Proud of you mate.

Growing strong together.

Cheers,
Si

A neighbour kindly gave us their old wooden dollhouse a while back.

What started as a simple clean-up turned into a slow renovation project with my daughter, sanding, painting, fixing little pieces and figuring things out together.

It definitely took longer than expected (projects with a 4-year-old tend to).

But isn’t that the whole point?

The finished dollhouse is great… but the real reward was the time spent working on it side-by-side.

Moments like this remind me that kids don’t just remember what we build for them.

They remember what we build with them.

1. Regular health checks with your GP
Scheduling health checks is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay on top of your health. Your GP can:
Assess your stroke risk;

Monitor critical factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar;

Help you make lifestyle changes or recommend medications to lower your risk.
Tip: If you’re over 45 (or over 30 for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people), it’s especially important to get a health check.

2. Monitor key risk factors
Blood pressure: High blood pressure is the #1 risk factor for stroke. Aim for normal levels around 120/80 and get your blood pressure checked regularly.

Check for irregular pulse: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition where your heart beats fast and out of rhythm. AF increases stroke risk—ask your GP to check your pulse.

Cholesterol: High cholesterol can lead to blocked arteries. Your GP can guide you with diet, exercise, or medication.

Blood sugar: Uncontrolled diabetes increases stroke risk. Regular monitoring and healthy choices can make a big difference.

3. Make healthy choices daily
Be active: Aim for 30 minutes of activity most days. Exercise not only lowers your stroke risk but also boosts your mood and energy levels.

Eat well: Enjoy a balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Cut back on salt, sugar, and saturated fats.

Avoid smoking & excess alcohol: Smoking and heavy drinking significantly increase stroke risk. If you need support to quit smoking or reduce alcohol intake, your GP can help.

Thank you Stroke Foundation for the info

A small parenting moment got me thinking about the mental load recently.

For context, I’m a nurse, so task lists, planning and anticipating needs are normal for me.

I’m also the primary parent, so I’m pretty well versed in the logistics of family life.

But a couple of weeks ago we organised a play date at the beach.

We arrived… and I realised I’d forgotten the swimmers.

And the beach toys.

Completely missed them.

It made me laugh, but it also reminded me of something important about the mental load of parenting.

It’s not just doing tasks.

It’s:

• anticipating needs
• identifying options
• deciding what to do
• monitoring whether it actually happened

That’s a lot of invisible thinking.

Women have been culturally trained in this for generations.

One thing I’ve realised through this work is that a lot of dads are learning this in real time.

Honestly, I am too.

As I support other fathers through Strong Dads, I’m also continuing to learn and adjust in my own family life. That’s part of the deal when you’re part of the first generation of men trying to engage more deeply in parenting.

None of us were really shown how to carry the mental load well.

That’s why community matters.

Strong Dads has a members-only community where fathers who are doing the work can connect, share ideas and support each other through the realities of parenting and life.

Because trying to figure this all out alone is where a lot of dads get stuck.

Cheers,
Si
