Lymphoedema Awareness Month 💙
March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month — a time to shine a light on a condition that is often misunderstood, under-recognised, and under-supported.
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition involving swelling due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid. It can occur after cancer treatment (such as surgery or radiation), injury, infection, or may be primary (present due to developmental differences in the lymphatic system). It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can impact other areas of the body.
It is not just “a bit of swelling.”
Without appropriate management, lymphoedema can lead to:
• Increased risk of cellulitis or infection
• Progressive fibrosis (hardening of tissues)
• Pain and heaviness
• Reduced mobility and function
• Fatigue
• Loss of independence
The good news? With early intervention and appropriate care, symptoms can be managed effectively and progression slowed.
Management may include:
✔️ Compression therapy
✔️ Manual lymphatic drainage
✔️ Exercise and movement
✔️ Skin care education
✔️ Ongoing monitoring and support
If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent swelling, heaviness, tightness, or recurrent infections — please don’t ignore it. Early assessment makes a difference.
Let’s continue to raise awareness, advocate for better access to treatment, and support those living with lymphoedema — not just this month, but always.
