Happy OT week everyone!! ๐ค๐
๐๏ธ Before children learn to write letters and words, they first learn to draw the shapes that form them!
These are called pre-writing shapes, the lines, curves, and patterns like vertical lines, circles, crosses, and squares that make up the building blocks of handwriting. ๐๐
โ๏ธ Why they matter:
Pre-writing shapes help children develop the hand strength, control, and movement patterns needed for writing. Each shape supports skills like coordination, visual-motor planning, and pencil control. ๐๐ค
๐ถ The learning journey:
Children usually move through stages, from random scribbles โ to imitating โ to copying โ to drawing shapes independently. Supporting each stage builds confidence and sets them up for writing success later on.
Every child develops at their own pace, and thatโs perfectly normal โค๏ธ โจ If your child is still mastering these early shapes, activities like drawing, tracing in sand, painting, or playing with playdough can make it fun! ๐๐
