For your reading pleasure 📖
We've just purchased these fantastic books to live in Hinterland reception. They are fantastic resources for understanding and managing pain.

"All pain is real, and for many people it is a debilitating part of everyday life. It is now known that understanding more about why things hurt can actually help people to manage their pain and continue to go about daily life.

Recent advances in fields such as neurophysiology, brain imaging, immunology, psychology and cellular biology have provided an explanatory platform from which to explore pain.

Written by David Butler and Lorimer Mosley, Explain Pain uses simple language to discuss how pain responses are produced by the brain: how the autonomic motor and immune systems in your body contribute to pain in response to injury, and why pain can persist after tissues have had plenty of time to heal."

You may wonder why we so often assess and treat the under side of your lower rib cage. We are working on the diaphragm muscle, which is part of a treatment that is looking at the respiratory-circulatory osteopathic model of treatment.

The thoracic diaphragm is a domed circular muscle of respiration. It attaches the whole way around the inside of the lower 6 ribs, the xiphoid, the lumbar vertebra (L1-L3) via the diaphragmatic crura, and has attachments to the arches over the iliopsoas and quadratus lumborum muscles. To say the least, it's a pretty integral part of you body.

The capacity to breathe allows the free movement of body fluids and according to the concept of this model, treatment can improve respiratory dysfunction affecting the lung, rib cage, vascular, and lymphatic motion.
The founder of osteopathic medicine emphasised the importance of the thoracic diaphragm and body health.

Every now and again almost every patient that walks in the door, sits down and says the same thing. Its often something like "I'm so tired, exhausted, its so humid out there, I don't know what's wrong with me". Its also often at these times when its especially humid or cold, or those times when there's a lot going on in the world, whether that's your personal world or things like covid or political upheavals or Christmas is just around the corner.

As humans we so often expect to be able to achieve the same things all of the time. We live our weeks to a schedule and often expect to be able to handle that schedule well throughout the year and beyond that as we age.

However, the world we live in doesn't really work like that, we have cycles, seasons and many influences outside of us that are beyond our control that we also experience as humans. Our bodies use more energy coping with things like humidity and cold and stress and in these times we might be slightly less capable of doing the things we normally do. We might feel exhausted and we might need a Nanna nap 😄

Remember to listen to your body and give yourself a break.
